'We will take Cape back'

Senior ruling party leaders urged ANC supporters in the Western Cape to be ready for the battle to wrestle the province back from Helen Zille's Democratic Alliance.

Addressing a 98th ANC birthday celebration rally at the Elsies River Civic Centre, National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel told scores of party supporters that the DA's electoral dominance in the pro-vince was temporary.

He said: "We don't enjoy that same privilege here. We don't have the city or the province. But it is a temporary position.

"We will take them back, although it is not a God-given right. We will take them because we represent the interests of our people and we must listen to our people," Manuel said.

That is how a politician should behave. Not bringing religion into it (especially in a secular country), no fearmongering and hate speech.

Then comes the and idiot of the likes of ANC Western Cape convenor Membathisi Mdladlana:

"We have been defeated by an alliance between the DA and the National Party. How old are they? We are 98 years old, Hallelujah".

The Western Cape had the highest pass rate in the country! Shouldn't you be focussing on your provinces where education is a lot worse?

Anyway, my point is that Manuel is a more educated and mature politician than the rest of ANC. If there were more members of his calibre perhaps I could show some respect to the ruling party. Instead we're left with fools like Mdladlana and Andile Lili - these people are the reason the ANC will never have the support of the white or coloured population (and a fair amount of educated black folk).
 
Either way, they want to take back a province that is now doing a lot better than it was under the rule of the ANC? Why not deal with the provinces they still control at the moment rather than trying to take on another province when they fail dismally at dealing with the issues on their plates at the moment.

From a political point of view the ANC is frightened to death at the prospect the DA might do well and therefore start to encroach esp. in provinces like Gauteng where people may just start to vote on issues instead of race like it is now.

The ANC argues the DA is only looking after the well off in the WC.

As things currently stand, people finally have something to compare government performance against. If the WC all of a sudden starts looking like a much better place to live (hypothetically speaking of course :D ) ... better education and medical , less crime , more jobs ... you get the drift ... then the masses might just start asking some hard questions. From the ANC's this is to be avoided at all costs.

I figured as much my question was rhetorical. The anc preffer the masses to be as uneducated as possible. Nothing to compare the anc to makes for very easy choices come voting time.

Yes we would hoop so, but I doubt your average ANC supporter ask questions. What they will do is to migrate to the WC but still vote for the ANC. After a while the WC will be flooded with migrants who vote for the ANC and we are back at square one.

I think most White people vote for DA and most Black people vote for ANC. I suspect it will be like that for a long time irrespective where you are in the country.

The DA is fortunately collecting more and more disillusioned middle-class black folk. Perhaps its not the ideal for them, but they are educated and aware that the DA can do a better job for their lives than the ANC.

Maybe the DA will one day present itself in a different form that can appeal to more walks of live. However, they need to be careful of compromising their intergrity at that expense.

The problem the DA is likely to encounter is that a lot of those educated black diamonds are beneficiaries of BEE and are unlikely to back a party that still has an iffy stand on those policies. Even on competence people still prefer those from their own race.

I disagree. Obviously I can't speak for everyone but I'd, personally, prefer someone of a race other than my own who is competent, to some colossal moron who just so happens to be the same race as myself.

Agreed. Manuel and Sexwale are the only two ANC members I can think of who are a cut above the rest.
