New SABC law complaint

The Democratic Alliance has written to the Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda to object to a proposed law that aims to levy a one percent personal income tax on working South Africans to fund the SABC.

I would be okay with this if they did away with annual TV licenses.

Good. This law makes me seriously mad. Why do I need to fund the SABCs incompetence?

1%? Depending on your income that's higher than the annual TV licence fees.

If this ridiculous law comes into effect then TV licences should be scrapped!

Yeah after posting that I did the sums and found that it was quite a bit more, if they take 1% of the amount they are taking already I wont really mind but don't take another percent.

The SABC is a rotting dinosaur. Rather scrap it and execute all the staff in a mass mercy killing.

Shouldn't a broadcaster make money from advertisements?

Why the FSCK should I pay for some ****ty channel I never watch, hell I replaced all the TV's in my house with a projector so I don't have to pay a tv lisence and now this?!

So they want to tax every working person regardless of whether they own a tv??

So you don't have DSTv either then?

This can't be serious?

That means if you earn 1m - you have to pay effectively R10,000 pa TV license?

My TV will be gone so fast....

Our useless government will try and tax just about everything until EVERYONE except government is in poverty.

DSTV And SABC will loose clients so fast.....

From what I can make of it, it's even worse than that. You'll be paying the tax regardless of whether you have a TV or not.

Like we have comparison's between our broadband offering compared to overseas, it would be interesting to see how other broadcasters make money (other than adverts ofcourse). I know the BBC charges quite a bit but the quality of their broadcasted shows is chalk and cheese compared to ours.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/licencefee/ <-- The BBC are nice enough to give you a breakdown of where the money is going.

If they only tax those who are working and who owns a tv, what prevents me from transferring ownership of my tv to my wife who is not working?
Thus it does seem that every single working person will be taxed regardless. This seems quite socialist.

i make it a rule not to watch tv, i only watch dvds, so why should I pay for something that is always 3 years behind the rest of the world, movie, series and soap wise???

I don't watch TV, for the same reason why i don't sit and listen to a parrot all the time. Why not make internet free, everyone has a innate human right to freedom of information. Are we all bonsai kittens to our cultures and the environment we live in? I think that we should all have the keys to the jar, even if we don't open it, we have a right to escape it and find the truth, for this is the only way in which we learn to know our being.
