Harare - Zimbabwe will seek highly indebted poor country status to have its $6 billion international debt cancelled to help spur economic growth, Finance Minister Tendai Biti said on Monday.

Zimbabwe's unity government, formed last year by bitter foes President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to end an economic crisis, has failed to attract much-needed foreign aid, partly due to huge debts.

Zimbabwe has enlisted the support of the African Development Bank to draft a debt relief plan that would unlock access to international finance, seen as crucial to revive the economy after a decade of decline.

"There is a huge opportunity cost Zimbabwe is suffering as a result of the stifling debt. Without the debt overhang we would be growing by 15% annually," Biti told reporters in Harare after meeting a visiting team of senior ADB officials.

Biti said while there were divergent views on the debt clearance strategy, seeking HIPC status - which would require sweeping reforms and setting firm performance targets - was the best option.

"There is no consensus position yet in Cabinet, but I've said give me an alternative that allows us to get this debt serviced without prejudicing our meager resources," Biti said, adding that the government would make a "bold" decision on the matter within the first quarter of 2010.

Visiting ADB vice president for operations, Aloysius Ordu said although Zimbabwe's power-sharing government had made progress, there would be no full co-operation until Zimbabwe resolved the debt issue.

"There is a huge opportunity cost Zimbabwe is suffering as a result of Robert Mugabe's policies and national corruption.

Fixed.

Don't give them a cent.

So all an African country needs to do is it's "leaders" to run it into the ground and all debt get's cancelled...maybe that will be Julius Malemas plan when his president of SA.
His turn-around strategy.....

I just found out Robert Mugabe's son Robert jnr goes to school up the road from me at Bishops, one of Cape Town's most expensive private schools. DISGUSTING that Bishops would allow criminal vermin to send their spawn to their school. Rubbish like that should be stopped from breeding and spreading their diseased gene pool around, never mind schooling their kids in Cape Town. Makes me sick.

Not sure how we can punish the kids for the sins of the father?

So why are the youth of today blamed for Apartheid and colonialism ?

We can take a firmer stance against the entire 'royal' Zimbabwe family. Don't allow their offspring to study in South Africa. I am sure Zimbabwe also had top private schools.

The rest of Zimbabwe youth can't get a proper education, but the offspring of Mugabe is given top class education!

Paying for school fees from the equivalent of war crimes should not be allowed by Bishops. Bishops should be made an example of in the local papers.

The little 16/17 year old mugabe spawn should go back to Zimbabwe before he infects other people. He is being groomed for a big position in Zanu-PF already and attends state functions with big Bob Mugabe. At 16/17 you know right and wrong.

"Robert Junior is now being seen more often around the geatric leader at major state functions and there is no doubt something is brewing, another Zanu-PF source who declined to be named told The Zimbabwe Telegraph.

"You will see him representing Zvimba at some point in the future, and eventually becoming a Zanu-PF leader before becoming a President, a more or less Monthlanthe-Zuma scenario where he will lead the party without necessarily being President until he reaches the legal age to become President, the source said.

Expel the little sh|t for conspiring with an immoral political party.

From the same article -

Robert Mugabe Junior is 16 and recently completed his O-Level exams which he is believed to have flunked.

Last year's O-Level results are still yet to be released after money earmarked for paying the examiners was abused by Mugabe's personal banker and Central Bank Governor Gideon Gono on a trip to Hong Kong by the First Lady Grace Mugabe.

"Robert Mugabe Junior is slowly being introduced to the Party. He cannot be President now or in 10 or 20 years but Mugabe is positioning him so that he understands how his Party functions, one Zanu-PF insider told The ZImbabwe Telegraph.

"The young man is not so bright and Politics is probably the only thing he can make a mark in by virtue of him being Mugabe's son", he added.

And the daughter is at a Hong Kong university.

Mugabe's son goes to the ultra colonialist Bishops ? Who would have thought.
What is wrong with Soweto High ?

Pull out aid after putting mad Bob in power. Rather harsh :o

Exactly, Bishops is as 'English' as a school can get. They even have an Anglican chaplain. Half th guys in my family went there and trust me it is as colonialist as a school can get.

Now that I've seen what mini-Mugabe looks like I'll be keeping an eye out for the 'lil bastard. Bishops would have gotten a HUGE 'Donation' of blood money to get the brat into the school. Disgusting.
