Hmm. I suspect that Sony's console will be a bit more expensive since from a technical point of view at least, it cost more than what what M$ R & D did.

That's pretty amazing considering the power of it !
Hopefully someone will hack it so it can run standard windows XP or Linux - they got Linux running on the Xbox, so I don't see why not.
Basically, you'll get yourself a super computer for next to nothing ! :D
The old blade-holder and blades marketing ploy doesn't apply if you can hack the box to do what it's not supposed to - they sell the consoles cheap and make the games expensive - if you can turn the xbox 360 into a regular computer, bargain !

It won't run Windows as it's based on the PPC architecture but I'm sure one could get Linux to run on it. Then again MS may have changed just enough in their PPC implementation to break any current OS's running on it.

Standard XBox is just an Intel based PC (sort-of). The 360 is based on PowerPC architecture, so there aint no way, no how you'll get Windoze to run natively on it. But Unix/Linux...maybe. Hey, maybe even OSX :D That'll impress the mac fanboys.
There was some news that Sony will give open access to the code for PS3 in order to promote more software...shouldn't be long before *nix gets ported. There was a PS2 Linux project and Sony supported it with peripherals, but I think it was just an academic challenge and never became really usable. PS3 might be different...
