a friend of mine is going to boost me tonight, but he said I must find an instance where Im going to get a decent weapon coz I seriously need another one...

ive been using the same one for about 10 lvls now! :wtf:

Im looking for something with serious fast attack, and I dont really care if its an axe, sword, mace... as long as its 1H

much appreciated

hmm u see theres so set weapon but i suggest look in ZF !! theres a pretty good one handed weapon in there

Erm... Ret is a 2h spec. why dont you try run an instance that is going to give you that instead?

If you are planning to power lvl your toon, I wouldnt be to preoccupied with getting any decent gear as given 3-5 levels it will probably be replaced anyway.

I would just focus on leveling up, if you happen to run an instance and get a nice wep then good for you otherwise just forgetaboutit :D

Get yourself THE prettiest weapon in the game:

The Phantom Blade

What's even cooler than it's crystal see-through blade is that it sheaths on your back.

Phantom Blade
Binds when equipped
One-Hand Sword
59 - 111 Damage Speed 2.60
(32.7 damage per second)
Durability 90 / 90
Requires Level 44
Item Level 49
Chance on hit: Decrease the armor of the target by 100 for 20 sec. While affected, the target cannot stealth or turn invisible.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. You are just going to waste gold. In a week the weapon is obselete. Just take the quest rewards and whatever drops for you. Worry about gear at about lvl 74/75 when you start completing some quest lines and opening group quests which give fairly good gear to set you up for lvl 80.

Sorry dude but that sentence is just all kinds of fail, you really need to slap your friend around and tell him to pay more attention to you. You definitely don't want a 1H weapon, Paladins can't dual wield, so but using a 1H weapon as Retribution you are halving your damage for no reason. As for 2H weapons, rule of thumb is you always pick the highest dps weapon, and given two of the same dps you go for the slower one. This is because not all your attacks are normalized so having a harder hitting weapon will still be a dps increase.

As other people have mentioned, you don't really need to bother too much with gearing up at low levels, just level up and you'll get the odd upgrade now and then.

When you hit 60 there is a decent polearm in Ramparts, and then around the 65-67 mark you can do the ring of blood in Nagrand for the axe there.

You can try and get the executioner's cleaver from ac. Descent stats and works nicely for a ret pala.

As others have mentioned, a fast weapon and/or 1hander really isn't ideal for Retribution. Get the biggest, slowest 2-handed mace, sword or axe you can find.
It's kinda pointless to instance grind for one since it'll be obsolete in 10 levels, particularly at 43 since it's just another 15 levels to Outlands and then everything you have gets replaced within an hour (one of the first quests in Hellfire will give you a green weapon that's better than almost any weapon, even epics, from the 'old world').
If I were you, try and find some green weapon in the auction house close to your level, grind out those 15 levels and hit that Dark Portal asap. Then at around 65 hit Ring of Blood for a nice blue that'll last you to Northrend, and then hit up a certain chain quest that'll also reward you with a blue that's good till 75, then hit the arena there by Gundrak for another lbue that'll last till 80. Then pick up an epic from Trial of Champions or one fo the new Icecrown 5mans.

Interesting point about paladins and duel-wield. Why do they even have shields. DK's and druids tank without shields. I mean reallly. Look at warriors. At least they can klap a mob with their shield and reflect spells. To equip a shield just for the stats is a fail man. Tonight im gonna vendor my pallys shield in protest !!! :D

However, OP, you should probably hit up Zul Farrak anyway. I think it has some nice weapon drops. Also Sunken Temple might have something for you.

zippy: Avengers Shield. Holy Shield. Etc.

I just want to add when you get to 70 do the daily normal dungeons if you tank them you will get groups instantly with the new LFG system

If you do this you will get about 200k to 300k XP per run and get some nice gear you also will get 2 Emblems of Triumph every day when you reach 80 you will be able to buy your first Piece T9 and be ready for HC's

Just did this with my Druid reached 80 5 days later I have 4 Pieces of my T9 tanking set

sheesh I know so little about this game... lol

i just dont understand why I need to get a SLOWER weapon? I mean, surely if I have something fast the chace of a crit hit is far more?

My crit rating is around 26% when I have all the skills active when Im fighting...

and thank you for all the help, much appreciated, im quite a noob! :(

When you look at any weapon you will see three things, the weapons damage range, the speed of the weapon and the resulting dps (damage per second). So if you have two weapons with the same dps and different speeds this means that the faster weapon MUST have a lower avg damage compared to the slower weapon. So taking your crit example, yes you will hit and thus crit more often BUT each hit and or crit will be doing less damage with the faster weapon compared to the slower one.

Now if all you did was auto attack mobs the only thing that would matter would be the dps, and the speed of the weapon wouldn't change your dps. However you don't just sit there auto attacking (well I hope not) you use abilities, and the rate at which you can use abilities doesn't change with your weapon speed. So if you can use ability A every 6s and it does more dmg with a slower weapon (because it's avg damage is higher) then your dps will increase by having the slower weapon equipped.

This quite an oversimplification though because blizzard does something called normalization on many of your abilities, which makes them assume you are using a weapon with a speed of 3.3 regardless of what you are actually using. The reason they did this was because what use to happen in the past is that slower weapons with less dps were being used over faster weapons with higher dps because the weapon speed was a multiplicative increase while weapon dps was a linear increase.

ANYWAY, the short version, many of your abilities are normalized, some are not, so it's still better to use the highest dps weapon BUT given the same dps, the slower weapon wins.

As a ret pally - Seal of Command ;)

Echo'ing what the rest have said... slower weapons hit less, but do more damage when they hit. At level 26 my pally was 2shotting mobs my level with SoC and a nice 3.8 speed weap

Keep your Judgement ability on cooldown (keep using it every chance you get)

The ret pally "rotation" can be summarized as follows:

Crusader Strike > Divine Storm > Judgement of Light > Consecration

Once you get to the higher tier talents, and The Art of War specifically, you should be weaving in either instant Flashes of Light on yourself or the Main Tank, or Instant Exorcisms to increase your DPS. These proc off of critical strikes, so just watch your buffs.

When one of these is on cooldown, use the next one and so forth. At your level, you should be using Seal of Command as it just slightly out does Seal of Righteousness. Also use Blessing of Kings on yourself. If you have a character at 80, I suggest using either the Repurposed Lava Dredger (if you have it for some reason) or the Bloodied Arcanite Reaper.

The reason you want a slow weapon is the high end damage. Critical strikes made with slower weapons deal much more damage than critical strike made with faster weapons. Also your choices of gear around that level are going to be rather limited, but finding any plate armor of the following styles should do the trick

[item name] of the bear = Strength and Stamina.

Both of these stats give you everything you need at low levels. Don't worry about intellect or spellpower because for Ret paladins, your spells scale with your melee attack power and that in turn scales with your strength.

If you find yourself running out of mana on any fights, just swap your seals and judgements to the appropriate ones and you should get it back in no time.
