I have recently, Dec 09, upgraded to the latest HAUWEI mobile connect 3G modem. I've used the old red one up to now with no problems at all. The new modem also worked fine. The problem however lies with Vodacom. Since I'm back in Kokstad, KZN after the holidays I am having endless problems with the network. Before I left for the holidays the network was fine. 3G reception and a stable connection and fast internet access.

But when I came back a total different story. The network wobbles between 3G, HSDPA, EDGE and GPRS.

It connects with 3G, then suddenly switches to HSDPA. The moment that happens, the connection is slower than GPRS in a bad reception area. Time out messages, Firefox can't find server, server not found, can't load page, page load error, and whatever messages there are! Or it just disconnects and then it takes me forever to connect again.

Or it just switches to EDGE or some days the network totally disappears. When it is set on EDGE it stays stable for a while. Then suddenly EDGE disappears and back to 3G to HSDPA. It takes forever to open a page and to upload a photo took me almost 60min yesterday.

It has been going on for weeks now and I'm not the only one complaining.

When I used the old red modem there was only 3G and GPRS. Now all of a sudden there is HSDPA also. . . .which is supposed to be the fastest of them all.

Can it be that Vodacom is upgrading in the area to HSDPA? But why does it go on for weeks and why does it fluctuates between the connections?

I'm forfeiting my data bundle now because I cn't use the internet as in the past?

I logged a complaint with Vodacom at 155 but haven't heard from them in 48 hours now.

What can the cause of this "identity crisis" be?

Yes. I did. and also set it to EDGE and GPRS only. Same thing happens. EDGE totally disappeared for a day or two. even on my cell phone there was no network available at the same time. It is a miracle that I managed to log in to this forum!

Then it sounds very much like a network issue. Please log a call with 082155 and PM the cell numbers concerned to VD here.

You KNOW! These damn clients constantly breaking their base stations *sigh* :p:p
