Handset Approval Who's Got The Final Word?

Eish! ... Today I'm overcome by sadness .....I was anxiously waiting to confirm the delivery date of my new handeset today .... the new and mighty Nokia 7710 .... all of a sudden I get an email stating that I have to choose another handest as this particular phone has not been aproved and will not be available.

To get this confirmed I called Autopage and yes they also said so .... so I would like to know from anyone if they could shed some light on who runs the tests on these handsets and what criterion/criteria do they have to meet , who got the final word? is it ICASA?

I've seen this particular phone on a couple of local websites, meaning it does work locally I'm not really willing to cough up R4500-R5500 cash ... is there a way one can get their hands on this phone or other "disapproved" handsets? Please respond ... I'm not evn sure what phone to go for anymore and my contract is due for an upgrade ... eish! sad day indeed :( ....
 
Hi

The device approval process is generally handled individually by the networks. ICASA also require approval of all radio devices sold in SA.

The reason network operators do their own approvals is to ensure that there are no incompatibilities with their specific network infrastructure and the way that it is implimented. All devices and infrastructure are standards based, however the complex nature of these standards occasionally allow for conflicting interpretations, and also a measure of flexibility is allowed for when defining ranges that equipment is to operate within, specifically to allow operators to tune their equipment to perform optimally in their specific environments. Due to these considerations, individual operators generally have their own unique methods of validating product performance and conformance, which is why occasionally a product may be approved on one network and not on another.

Specifically referring to the 7710 though, it is currently in process. The original approval samples provided were not approved, however we are currently in process with evaluating the replacement firmware version. It seems so far to be vastly improved and we hope to have the product approved shortly.
 
you can order it from the states / uk. if your lucky then it will get past customs.

sometimes ICASA just takes a while to approve the handset. you can always wait a while.
 
Just to add a little to this, last I heard Nokia has discontinued this handset, as well as the entire Series 80 platform. So maybe it's not such a good idea to get it anyway.
 
Thanks guys for the info .... I won't be getting that phone anymore due to the fact Im on contract and not realy willing to wait a couple of months ... I've settled for the SE P910i ... I actually did not care anymore what handset I get as I could not get the phone I would have liked ... :( ... aybe in a couple of months time then.

@ Sparky_za : As MTNHandsets has correctly pointed out the 7710 is the successor to the "guinea pig" 7700 .... and it's on the Series 90 platform. Nice phone indeed.

Spoke to mtn.
Nokia 7710 is available on contract.
Nokia 6680 is listed but not yet available and they have no clue as to when it will be released on the network.
 
I have the N7710 as well as the 6630. From using both these phones, I have come to the conclusion that the 6630 is by far the better of the two. This is largely due to the fact that there is just not that much software available for the 7710. Where as the 6630 can use most software for series 60. So I think it will be much the same for the 6680. So my 2 cents, get the 6630 or any of its close relatives :) Its an awesome phone!

Or should i wait for N6680.
Not worried about software for N7710 available now as it is basically new......
Think MTN is releasing 6680 when they launch 3g to the public......
Don't need 3G for phone.Will get a 3G data when they launch.
7710 have got what i need......what is your opinion.
 
The Nokia 6680 is approved, it is in stock and will be available next week. It is excellent for data because the bluetooth connection is fast and it supports 3G and EDGE so works across a wider area than a 3G-only device.
 
MTNBroadband, Just got off the phone with my MTN store to try pre-book my phone and was told that there would be a 3 month free promotion thing going on release (he mentioned thursday, But I believe your next week), but couldn't tell me what? Any clue as to what they where talking about?

My sentiments exactly I just want the phone for what it is, I am not concerned about 3G as EDGE is will do for the moment.

@ cpt1910 : I've heard it's available but my service provider does not know anything about it yet .... I'll wait till next month before I enquire ... been waiting or it for 2 Months since my contract was due for an upgrade. Have you had any luck?

Going to get mine on Sat.

I am based in cape Town but my SP is Autopage and they don't have it on their retention list yet ... will have to wait till next month I suppose ..... hey .. post your thoughts about the phone after you test drive it ;) .

Cool.I am with Sp.
Will do so,had already tested 2- one with old firmware and one with the latest firmware on it.Make sure your firmware is the latest I think it is something like this xxxxxxxxx26.0 can't remember.
reason for this is that with latest firmware performance and usability increases.Unlike the older firmware which makes it slow,hangs some times.
So make sure you get one with latest firmware on,if not before you do anything take to Nokia in Greenpoint and have them upgrade your firmware for you.
Will tell more after i have it and loaded some apps and games,movies,mp3..............to see how it really performs........untill then

Sweet ... but then all N7710's (via MTN) will probably have the latest firmware upgrade ... cause that was the reason the phone took long to get approved. I just hope the phone won't be too popular .... :mad: ...

Was the stability such a really big problem? I would like to know what the difference will be with the latest upgrade. Anticipating your review. Cheers

Was at MTN on Saturday.the guy before me also went for 7710When it was my turn i was told that they do not have anymore stock and is awaiting more stock as they had already requested it.But I am glad to say that the consultant took my details for an upgrade they did not try to sell me another contract.So will let you know when i get it.
 
Same story here!!!! :mad: .... I have now been told END OF JULY!!!! .... :confused: ....uhm ... oh well ... that's not really that far to get mad over ... :D ... have you got it yet?

Don't hold your breath for the end of July.I was told afterwards to expect stock in about 4-5 weeks.Got a company phone Nokia 6680.Still waiting on N7710.......
I will still take it out on my personal contract. :)
