The other day I finally decided to give up my pay-as-you-go number and go for a contract. I've got a phone and I'm not interested in purchasing a new one. I was bluntly informed by both VodaShop and MTN that both networks do not offer month-to-month contracts anymore.

This is absolutely insane. Everyone is now locked into a 24 month contract with the service providers. Is it only me that finds this ridiculous?

That's nonsense. The shops are telling you that because they don't get any commission on month-to-months AFAIK. Vodacom offers the 4U contract, Cell C offers Value Chat and MTN I think you can go for ProData although that one is expensive when it comes to making calls. Both Cell C and Vodacom's contracts have zero subscription but you pay extra for CLI and itemised billing. I have a Voda 4U and I can roam internationally with it.

Hmm.. seems I've been suckered into a 24 month contract. So how do I go about convincing Vodacom that I was indeed suckered and would like to revert to a month-to-month?

Spend more than the total repayment of the 24month vodacom contract on a lawyer who will get nothing done and you'd still be liable.

if the contract was signed recently, you can still go back and get the contract cancelled. "Cooling off period" its a consumer right. But I think its within 48 hours for cellphone contracts.
