PS3 gaming whilst listening to music? Anyone?

Ok, so you go out and pay a massive amount (yeah, us poor people see that as a lot of money) for a uber high tech console and you would come to expect the thing to be able to do more than one thing at a time? Think they call it multitasking or something like that.

Create a playlist, listen to some music and then decide to play a game whilst still listening to music. You can't? Blimey! XBox, no problem, would you like a cup of coffee with that sir? Yes please!

Am I missing something here or is this just what it is? How do you play games and listen to music at the same time on your PS3 console or am I expecting too much for what I've paid?
 
Yeah, I must admit this is really annoying! But I don't see a way around it. With the xbox you can pause the game and select the music you want to listen to, not a chance with the PS3
 
Then how would you hear Overlord giving instructions! FFS!

Besides, you can fight crime with the PS3.
 
some games do allow you to, Pacific rift, Killzone 2 in Multilayer and various others. There is rumors that the next firmware update will bring it as well as cross game chat. we can only hope.
 
I honestly don't think that this should be a game specific feature but rather a console thing? Might be missing the point here :( Maybe we can all protest and get them to build in that functionality with the next firmware release?

Super Stardust also allows you to play custom soundtracks. Also Pes2010 allows it too but there is a certain way to do it
 
Yeah, i listen to music when gamign sometimes on my ps3....namely brutal legend and guitar hero...works great for me....otherwise, rather be listening to the game...casual, racing and sports games, there is deifnitely an argument for it but games liek MW2 which i play the most, i rather be listening to the game....

It only requires a software update and as far as i'm concerned, sony looked at what their gamers really wanted and i think they delivered (least by version 3.0 of their software updates)...i don't miss this feature adn i'm sure it'll come in the near future, but if i'm anything like the rest of the Playstation gamer demographic, then it's not an important feature...

if its only a software update, why didnt they do it years ago, and its a very important feature, playing games with your own music is awesome, developers dont always choose good music
 
You guys miss the patent bit?

I'm pretty sure Sony could do it quite easily, they aren't allowed to from a legal POV.

that isn't really a good excuse, im sure lots of other things used by sony are patented as well

I guess it's Sony's fault they're not as anti-competitive as Microsoft. Feature for feature though I'd say the PS3 has more.

they do hold the patents on the good d-pads, maybe they should do a swap
