Getting new samsung pbx and license, how does the license work

Hi there we are upgrading our pbx at work. Currently we are using a ericson pbx. We have a dedicated line between site1 and site 2(3km apaprt).

The new pbx is a samsung pbx that supports voip. So now we are going to remove the dedicated telkom line and then use voip by using wireless. The guy from canon told me that he will come and install the voip when he have obtained the license that he is waiting for. He said that he need that license before he can install the voip system.

What i would like to know how does this license work? Have anybody else also have similar voip. Does this mean that the license is for the wifi link or just for the voip.

I did not ask the canon guy to much so i dont have more information.

PS: does the license fall under the icasa license?
 
It's more than likely a license to enable the VoIP functionality on the PBX. It's how they milk you for more money, even through it costs them nothing....
 
If it should happen that icasa comes and visit me then i will have the excuse of telling them that the we are using their license.

i have spoken to canon and they told me that they are working under the lisence of knysna muni.
 
Sounds like you are being milked by canon. Why don't you install a open pbx like asterisk and run the branch to branch calls via adsl?
Does not need any licence and gives you tons more flexibility.

I am busy playing around with asterisk. i want to use it on my wifi. Then i can call home to hear what is for dinner. :)

If i was the boss then i would have put asterisk in my business. And i dont think my boss will pay me 40k for building and managing a pbx. The other reason is that i will have sleepless nights when i go on holiday worrying if the pbx is still online.

40K for a pbx? Ouch.
With asterisk and a little mypbx device you can get asterisk installed for less than R5K.

There are several guys in the gardne route that can offer asterisk support, so no need for any worries.
BTW, there is a call center in Knysna that operates completely solely on asterisk and VOIP, without any telkom lines.
 
Im planning to put asterisk on a 1.1ghz pentium3. 1gig ram. Hope it meets the minumum system requirments

Biggest issue with older pc's is cpu speed, as it needs to be able to encode and decode (compress) the calls in real time. Slow cpu = bad voice quality and stutter.

Ok i have the option to use pentium3 or ubuntu VM running on a duo core

The VM ubuntu also play email, samba, mysql role

Thanx. Do you also have pbx from canon? So does this mean now that canon have put their voip on our system and that we are using their license?
 
Kameelperdza, - you will have to tell your Canon sales man or techie to be more specific about the license. (VoIP)
As Imel said Asterisk & MyPBX (or IP PBX 01 gateway ) perfect for remote side

So Canon & Telkom rule the PBX market in the GardenRoute
The 40k price did that include the VoIP phones
