Taiwan, Suicide

Taipei - Supermarkets and 24-hour convenience store chains in Taiwan, which has one suicide almost every two hours, have agreed to join in the government's suicide-prevention campaign, an official said on Thursday.

"Six supermarket chains and four convenience store chains have agreed to co-operate with us in preventing suicide," said Cheng Shu-hsin of the Department of Health.

"The Rxmart, which has 500 supermarkets, has modified its computer program, so that if a customer buys only charcoal, when he or she goes to the counter to pay, the cash register will flash a warning," she said.

"Then, the cashier will ask the customer, 'Are you buying charcoal for a barbecue? Why don't you buy meat?'

"If the customer expressed suicidal thoughts, the cashier would suggest the customer call a suicide-prevention hotline," she said.

The other supermarkets and convenience stores are planning to find their own ways to join in the suicide-prevention effort - either by asking cashiers to talk to customers who buy only charcoal or by printing suicide-prevention warnings on their promotion sheets.

Burning charcoal, which produces toxic fumes, is one of the common methods used in committing suicide in Taiwan.

Taiwan has one of the highest suicide rates in Asia. In 2008, 4 128 people ended their lives.

To prevent suicide, the Department of Health has started a 24-hour hotline and has printed the hotline's phone number and warnings on the outside of charcoal packages.

Rate is shockingly high. Why so high in Taiwan?

Also scary that tellers at pay points will now have to play psychiatrist.
I can see lots of offended people at the counter.

Are you buying charcoal for a barbecue? Why don't you buy meat?'

to which you answer "no, i'll be fire walking tonight, but maybe i should pick up some sosaties just in case"

Wouldn't it be easier to run the car in the garage?

Do they even barbecue in Taiwan?
I wonder what braaied cockroaches will taste like.

I don't think they can afford their own cars there. It's like Honk Kong where taxes and stuff on personal vehicles are just too expensive. Forcing you to use public transport.

That sucks. Anyone know why the number is so high? Work stress? Money troubles? They are going to have to deal with the root causes as well else the same people will just be back in a few months time trying to buy charcoal again.

Well if you do plan to remove yourself from the planet. Just buy a packet of meat, 2liter Coke and some snacks with the charcoal. Smile and pay.
They will never suspect anything.

EDIT. Not even the computer will find error with that.

I believe that it's a really high stress environment, with a lot of pressure on people to perform, either at work or at school or university.

And, of course, the high population density doesn't help.

yeah but nobody wants to spend cash that they don't need to, I mean, they're gonna be wasting all that meat, snacks and coke!
perhaps have a braai first, then say bye-bye.

you might even choke on a potato chip if you are lucky?

After the meat, coke & snacks you probably won't feel like doing yourself in. BTW, I don't think they have those, it's more like green tea and noodles - maybe that's the problem !

I don't know about Taiwan, but Korean barbeque is delicious.

And, no, it wasn't dog.

'Are you buying charcoal for a barbecue? Why don't you buy meat?'

Because no one with any taste buys their meat at a supermarket. We go to proper butcheries. ;)

I don't think it's any worse than other countries. They also get national health care etc

I don't think so. Our murder rate is also at least one every 2 hours.
