After years of being sworn at and being called a k****r and a "baboon", a 55-year-old Soweto man broke down in court while reliving the abuse he suffered from a racist who also hit him with a walking stick.

Simon Manana, who lives at the Dewetshof Retirement Village in Kensington, said the police and the village's management did nothing to stop his tormentor, who also lives at the retirement home. He had obtained a protection order to try to stop Michael Renney, 84, but it did not help.

Manana said it was only after approaching the Human Rights Commission that Renney was subpoenaed to appear before the Equality Court.

Manana, who moved into Dewetshof in 2007 after a financial windfall, said Renney was hostile to him from the start.

He provoked him by spraying his car with water under the pretext that he was watering his garden. "When I confronted him, the name-calling started and I was sworn at."

The protection order did not deter Renney, who wrote the words "Simon jou k****r" and "you f***ing baboon" in red ink on two boards.

Manana said that whenever he parked his car, Renney, whose house is opposite the parking lot, would make sure there was no one around before holding up the boards to him or producing a dildo and making obscene actions with it.

"At other times he would make gestures of cutting my throat and obscene sexual actions. He continued to harass me on a daily basis, disregarding the court order.

"One day he held the board again reading 'Simon jou k****r' and waved the dildo around. I waved my hand in annoyance and walked towards my house and, before I knew it, he was behind me.

"He grabbed my collar from behind and pulled me with force. I could not keep my balance and I fell on top of him.

"A struggle ensued and I could not get up without my walking stick.

He took it and started beating me with it. During the assault, I recall him swearing at me and calling me names like 'k****r' and saying 'this is not an ANC territory'."

Inspector Freddie Ledwaba, of the Cleveland police station, confirmed that Manana had opened two cases with them.

"One was dismissed by the court due to lack of evidence and I do not know the outcome of the other one," he said.

Manana said he approached the Human Rights Commission as a last resort.

The caretaker of Dewetshof, the social worker and management declined to comment.

The matter was postponed to March 18, when more witnesses are expected to testify.

Sick bullying scumbag bastard

I sincerely hope he gets the worst possible punishment there is for something like this. How the hell can you carry on like that; treat someone in such a filthy manner and still live with yourself?

Renney, please, do the world a favour and drop dead. It doesn't need people like you.

and ...

how do you know the black guy isn't inciting it ? and now crying wolf as we know how our system works.

always two sides to a story.

Im amazed how quickly some people just believe everything.

I'm no saying its right, it just sounds weird. I mean i could lay charges against anyone if i wanted :/

How do you "incite" racist attacks like that? The only way that could possibly be "incited" is by having a different skin colour. There is no excuse. If there was tension between the two, there are way better alternatives to handle it than resorting to name-calling and racist retort.

The dude is 84... If he is threatened by that then shame.

Threatened? Insulted in his own neighbourhood, harassed outside his own home and treated like filth? Yes. Threatened? Can't say he was threatened, except perhaps for his right to dignity.

I'm actually amazed at the racist apologists so far in response to this article.

Ambiguous post, who were you backing? I'm guessing Renney.

In which case:

Yes, assault is completely non-threatening. People who feel threatened by assault are sissies.

/end sarcasm

I wish I was still amazed at the racist apologists.

When the black guy is the bad guy it's off to the gallows with him before blinking an eye.

When the white guy is ' allegedly ' the bad guy there are calls for proof, innocent until being proved guilty, he started it, etc etc.

So much for impartiality.

I think that you believe the one guy word-for-word (note the lack of witnesses) while calling the other a bully and pariah. We don't know the whole story. Maybe he abused him maybe he didn't, maybe the victim did something to start it by calling the older guy names or something. Who knows.

The media does not identify the race of the suspects usually. When people hear stories of a group of men going into a house, raping the 10 yr old daughter then murdering her, then raping her mother and murdering her, they get upset. So they call for their punishment. In this instance we have none of that and we have one guy accusing another of 'racist' behaviour and we all know that blacks can be equally racist to whites, and the current government often also makes racist, anti-white statements. In such crimes - he said this and he said that, who do you believe? Do you believe that the 84yr old is demented and even owns a dildo, and uses that to frighten some poor neighbour or do you consider that maybe there are two sides to the story. Maybe the old guy did not like the new guy - the new guy takes it as racism and decides to get rid of him - for all those years of inequality. Anything is plausible.

Word-for-word? No. But Renney's actions hardly speak of a well-grounded individual who deals with whatever problems in a respectful and non-racially-motivated manner.

The fact that he is 84 does mitigate it somewhat. He is less physically capable and his mental state may be called into question. It is still assault but not with malicious intent.

Again you believe the one guy - who could have made it all up. Assuming it is true, than the old guy is really evil. However you have no proof. If we had video footage of it and could also see what led up to it,
then maybe we'd know. For all we know the 55yr old walked up to the old guy and insulted him, because not all black men are good and not all white men are evil, you know that too could have happened. We don't know.
Lamenting how evil the one guy is based on the testimony of one person is just prejudicial in my view. Note how the police dropped the case for lack of evidence. How convenient also that the guy was so
careful to only bully the complainant when no-one was around.

As for dealing with something in a non-racially-motivated manner - calling someone a k-f does not mean you hate black or other people. If you call someone that out-of-the blue sure, but if someone does something to
anger someone else - and gets called that in anger, it's hardly racially motivated.

It does seem weird that there are no witnesses in a retirement village where people are about all day long.

EDIT: and a frail 84 year old man beating up a 55 year old man? That's even weirder.

What evidence is there that EITHER of his two cases are truly valid?

The effort he's gone to to open the two cases is totally irrelevant, if there is no evidence to back up the claims in the two cases then they may as well not have been opened in the first place.

Well if some random 84 year old was waving a dildo at me i would laugh him off. it would be entertaining, nothing more.

He's 55 years old. All he wants to do is water his flowers and read the newspaper, yet he's gone through so much effort to lay two cases and has now approached the human rights commission. For someone making it all up, thats a lot of effort to have to go through.

55 years old is not that old at all! Yet he's being set upon by a man 30 years older, and in all likelihood, quite a bit more frail. Hell, my father is 59 years old and no where near that incapable!

Bullies don't take pride in being able to dodge the law... there are lots more complicated reasons why "bullies" can occasionally dodge the law.

Are you sure this 55year old man has nothing to gain from making this all up?
He is making allegations that he seems to be unable to backup with ANY evidence... therefore his allegations are only that, and they cannot go beyond that until there is evidence.
What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

You'd only have to flip through a few threads to notice that innocent until proven guilty does not usually apply in forum discussions. Lets say this was an alleged attack by a 55 year old black man on an 84 year old white man, I doubt your reply would be the same if we only had the white guy's side of the story. Maybe not yours but in general anyway.

Also, going to the human rights commission and giving sworn testimony is not really worth whatever can be of gain in an old age home, it's also very risky if you have no hard evidence. I doubt anyone is stupid enough to go to the HRC when they're making things up completely. Of course we don't know the other side of the story yet.

or maybe he wants to sponge money by playing on the white man guilt trip.
