A 36-year-old woman has laid a complaint of assault against the Johannesburg Metro Police Department after being hit and detained overnight for no apparent reason.

Sistah Hlongwane, who runs her own catering company, claims she was trying to find parking in Yeoville, Johannesburg, on January 27 when a metro police officer told her she was obstructing traffic.

"This officer started screaming at me and came to my car, opened the door and yanked the keys out of the ignition. I ran after him in the rain telling him I needed to lock my car and he waved his hand at me, hitting my lower lip which started to swell," Hlongwane recalled.

She said another metro police officer who arrived shortly after was not interested in her complaint that her keys had been taken by his colleague.

"I was then locked in the police van and driven around for an hour and then taken back to the same spot and told I had interfered with police duties and taken to Yeoville police station."

She alleges that she had abuse hurled at her by the officers.

She was later taken to Hillbrow police station where she was put in a holding cell. She said she was not allowed to call family or to see a doctor, despite asking.

"There I was asked my age by two different officers who then started to flirt with me, saying that I was just the right age for them. I was also asked why I had one child and then told that I was a selfish mother. I was in a cell with three other women, one of whom had an 11-month-old baby who cried the entire night because she was hungry and they refused to get food for the toddler."

After spending the night in the cells, Hlongwane said she was released with no explanation.

Her personal belongings, including her handbag containing her ID, had been left in her car.

"This incident has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. I'm shattered because this isn't the environment I want my 9-year-old boy growing up in," said Hlongwane.

Hlongwane said she was meant to deliver food to clients that day and was unable to tell them that she could not make it as she was not allowed any phone calls. Instead, she had to refund her client R5000 for failing to deliver.

Police were not able to confirm the case on Friday, but Hlongwane said she has been issued with a case number.

She has also reported the matter to the Independent Complaints Directorate.

I hope they throw the book at these officers, they failed to follow protocol and marred all the hardworking guys by association with by these bullies with badges.

No, it's business as usual for them. Only this time the victim stood up to take action against those beasts.
 
Looks like an illegal arrest - these guys should get some jail time, that will stop this happening again !
 
Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Same story, different day and once again, NOTHING will come of it.
 
It’s unfortunate and disturbing to read of incidences of abuse by the very people who have sworn to protect and serve.

Unless she has clear evidence of the abuse with an eye witness and photos...........nothing will come of this.
They are a law unto themselves.
 
Sounds like nothing more than heresay.

When do we get to hear the other side of the story, see the evidence, photographs, witnesses, audio etc ?

She sounds just like a troublemaker.

These blobs of fat in uniform needs to be brought off the street. They do more harm than good. They need to go back to "watching cars" and manning parking booms.

But I do agree with you... again, heresay.. and an investigation has to take place to see if the cops did anything wrong or if Ms Hlongwane was a troublemaker and was rightly arrested.

But I think her name is amusing.. Sistah.... wtf calls their kid that?

We need to go back to having traffic cops, and the normal police.

There is no place for these undisciplined metro cops.

All 2 of them? Lol. It's like the old joke about lawyers --- they aren't ALL bad, it's just the 99% that give the rest a bad name.
