I found the holy grail today and wanted to share this with everyone.
I've been suffering with an EDGE connection for a very long time now and something kept telling me that this should not be. Lucky for me, I stayed persistent! Even though the Vodacom coverage maps "say" that there is no 3G coverage in my area I had the feeling the signal might just be extremely low. Most phones are set to look for the strongest signal, even though it's the slower connection and FINALLY I found a way past this on the OMNIA! I now get 3G and great speeds! HOOOORRRRAAAAA!
I wanted to share!
On the Omnia...
You CAN force 3G preference for your phone.
dial *#1546792*#
don’t press the call button, it will automatically take you to the Admin Settings.
select ‘3 Network & Call Settings’
select ‘Network Order’
select ‘WCDMA first’
press Done
press the End Call Button
Reset your phone and start walking around to look for better signal.
I have to sit outside on the stoep when I'm online, but hey it's fast as hell!
For those of you interested in getting 3G all the time if possible (up to the lowest possible signal) while maintaining GSM as a backend if in case you don’t have any signal, simply leave the Network Mode to auto and then change the Network Order to WCDMA first in order to prioritize WCDMA regardless of signal strength.
I hope this helps someone else.
