Jerusalem – The Mossad was in the hot seat on Wednesday over the murder of a top Hamas man in Dubai, as at least seven Israelis said their identities were stolen by the assassins, widely thought to be agents of the Jewish state's infamous secret service.

The killing of top Hamas militant Mahmud al-Mabhuh while on a weapons purchasing trip to Dubai last month has widely been blamed on the Mossad, although no evidence has yet linked the agency, which in keeping with tradition has kept mum on the affair.

But suspicions deepened after Dubai this week released the photos and names of the 11 European passport holders – six from Britain, three from Ireland, one from Germany and one from France – alleged to have been members of the hit squad.

Shortly afterwards, Britain, France and Ireland said that the passports used in the operation were faked and at least seven of the "assassins" turned out to be dual national Israelis whose passports appeared to have been stolen.

"Since I realised that they used my identity and my name, I've been walking around like a zombie," Paul John Keally, an Israeli-British citizen, told the Israeli media.

"I woke up this morning and suddenly my life is like an espionage movie. It is all very worrying but I know I have not done anything wrong," he was quoted as saying by Britain's Daily Mail.

"I have not left Israel for two years and I certainly have not been to Dubai recently," he said.

The wife of Stephen Hodes, another British-Israeli and a physiotherapist living west of Jerusalem, echoed the sentiment, telling Maariv: "It started like a story that made us laugh, but now we don't know how to take it."

As the Israelis struggled to come to terms with their newfound fame as international "assassins," the Israeli press skewered the operation that it has widely laid at the feet of the storied Mossad.

"A successful operation? Not so sure," read a headline in the mass-selling Yediot Aharonot daily. "Cracks are appearing more and more in this operation which at first looked like a grand success."

Wrote Maariv: "Whoever assassinated senior Hamas figure Mahmud al-Mabhuh is in trouble... The intelligence was of high quality, the implementation was polished, the assassins entered and left Dubai safely, everything went like clockwork. Unfortunately, so did the security cameras."

A columnist in the left-leaning Haaretz called for the resignation of Mossad chief Meir Dagan over the affair and one in the right-wing Israel Hayom questioned the wisdom of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu having extended Dagan's mandate to a fifth year.

Dubai police announced on Monday that it was hunting six British passport holders, three with Irish passports, including a woman, and the holders of a German and a French passport, all of whom had managed to leave the UAE after the assassination.

British, French and Irish officials said on Tuesday that the passports were fake.

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, has accused Israel of killing Mabhuh, 50, and vowed revenge.

Its members have said Mabhuh, who was based in Damascus, was on a visit to Dubai to buy weapons for Hamas's armed wing of which he was a founder.

Perhaps we can send this lot to hunt down and assassinate Osama ( presuming he's already alive ). At least there will be no cctv cameras to capture them on film.

If it takes 11 of them to kill one Palestinian, then they need to send everyone they can to take out Osama.

He had a security squad protecting him (how many?). As long terrorists like this feel unsafe ANYWHERE, this type of thing will work. There is no evidence of Mossad involvement.

Apart from their faces on film.

Forged Israeli passports - sounds like Mossad to me.

Who's faces? Wait for the real Mcoy before jumping too conclusions and if it is true then so be it. What was he doing in Dubai again? Point in case!

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged a "full investigation" on Wednesday into how fake British passports were linked to the killers of a Hamas chief, amid calls here for Israel to explain its role.

"We are looking at this at this very moment," he told London's LBC radio, a day after Britain said it believed six British passports held by members of an 11-member hit team which killed Mahmud al-Mabhuh were fraudulent.

"We have got to carry out a full investigation into this. The British passport is an important document that has got to be held with care," he told London's LBC Radio.

Menzies Campbell, a member of the House of Commons foreign affairs committee, said answers were needed over "speculation" about the involvement of Israel's Mossad secret service in the killing in Dubai last month.

"If the Israeli government was party to behaviour of this kind, it would be a serious violation of trust between nations," said Campbell, a former leader of Britain's third biggest party, the Liberal Democrats.

"If legitimate British passport holders were put at risk it would be a disgrace...

"Given the current speculation, the Israeli government has some explaining to do and the ambassador should be summoned to the Foreign Office to do so in double-quick time."

Dont know. SA Home Affairs provide pretty good fakes.

Very experienced those lot, by the millions!

On a more serious note. I would not be surprised if SA was again abused as entry/exit point as before. Just too easy!

It would have been really funny if they'd been caught and executed.

Israel just cant win, if they take out terrorists, by firing rockets from an apache helicopter and blowing up their entire house/apartment block, they get vilified.. If they quietly assassinate a terrorist doing an arms deal in a foreign country without so much as a butterfly as collateral damage they get critisized..

Britain last night fired the first shot in a potentially explosive diplomatic row with Israel by calling in the country's ambassador to explain the use of faked British passports by a hit squad who targeted a Hamas official in Dubai.

The Israeli ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office to "share information" about the assassins' use of identities stolen from six British citizens living in Israel, as part of the meticulously orchestrated assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.

Britain has stopped short of accusing Israel of involvement, but to signal its displeasure, the Foreign Office ignored an Israeli plea to keep the summons secret. "Relations were in the freezer before this. They are in the deep freeze now," an official told the Guardian.

Israel's foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, insisted there was no proof that the Mossad was involved in Mabhouh's killing in a Dubai hotel last month, but added that Israel had a "policy of ambiguity" on intelligence matters.

However, there were calls in Israel for an internal government inquiry into whether the Mossad was responsible for identity theft from dual nationals, and criticism of its chief, Meir Dagan, for what critics described as a clumsy operation that risked alienating European allies.

Of course. Their mere existence justifies criticism

The criticism is SOP when this happens in a foreign country. Mind you Israel will not admit to sending the assassins, there's plausible deniability in this things should anyone get caught. God forbid the assassination happened in Iran.

Assuming it was the Israelis to start with. Given their history of targeted strikes it's a reasonable assumption to make, and they'd certainly have an interest in ordering a hit on al-Mabhuh, although they don't seem to go in for that as much as back in the '70's & '80's.

It also occurs to me though, that there's often a lot of conflict within Hamas, between Hamas & their sponsiors, and between the Arab states and the Palestinians in general - the Jordanians killed between 5000 and 20 000 Palaestinians during Black September for example, depending on what source you read. It could be that al-Mabhuh managed to annoy whoever was supplying the weapons, or maybe it was believed the Israelis had turned him or something. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that something like this has happened - the Harriri assassination in Lebanon comes to mind - and I'm sure somebody like Syria or Iran, both of whom are more than capable of forging passports - would jump at the chance to implicate and embarras Israel in the process.

But yeah, chances are the smart money is on Israel having assassinated al-Mabhuh, and their having suffered one of those annoying and embarrasing operational SNAFU's that bite you on the ass from time to time.

It wasn’t Mossad (although they are giving high-fives all round). Unless the have become self-indulgent halfwits in the past 20 years, it is too inept. There are too many assassins. To my knowledge, Mossad only deployed this many to hunt-down the perpetrators of the Munich massacre. With their training and the resources of Mossad, they could easily have made it look like an accident. “A Hamas hero died in a car accident/drowning/heart attack. The rest of the Arab world joins our Palestinian brothers in mourning this hero of the resistance.” <gag> Less risky for the Israeli’s.

With the right mindset (ruthless) and resources (Mossad) any forum member could have done a better job. It’s trivial. It smacks of a false flag operation by other Arabs to implicate Israel. It’s in the process of backfiring.

What about the legitimate passport owners who are now under threat ?

I’m not sure if this is aimed at me (but I’ll respond anyway). There are two possibilities:

1. A Mossad genius gave instructions for a paper trail to lead straight back to Israel and imperil Israeli citizens and implicate Israel in the inept mess. (Yeah, right.)

2. An Arab genius (chuckling at his own cleverness) <roll eyes> gave instructions for a paper trail to lead straight back to Israel and imperil Israeli citizens so that they could ‘discover’ it later through their magnificent forensic abilities.

I go with option 2.
