Zille to ban blue-lights

President Jacob Zuma will not be exempt from new provincial legislation, to be announced today by Premier Helen Zille, that will ban all politicians from using blue-light convoys and sirens in the Western Cape.

Zille, who is also acting Community Safety MEC while Lennit Max is on special leave, is expected to announce the new legislation in her second State of the Province speech this morning.

The decision to pull the plug on "blue-light bullies" comes after the arrest of University of Cape Town student Chumani Maxwele for allegedly gesturing at President Jacob Zuma's six-car convoy, she said.

Absolutely awesome!!!!

I live near parliament in Cape Town, and watch these guys everyday, driving like complete maniacs down Roeland Street, sirens blasing. They stop for no1, you get out of their way or get knocked down. Its completely pointless, all they need is one unmarked vehicle to transport someone safely. Why need 8 escort vehicles all hooting and running their sirens at full blast. Its a disturbance of the peace to be honest, half the time im asleep in bed.

Kudos Zille, i hope this gets passed and adhered to. Arrest them if not.
 
Does the province have jurisdiction over parliament? Won't the parliamentarians just claim to be acting on national orders...? Technically Zujma's/cowboys' security falls under national government.

this will force a major showdown... expect to see the Blue Lights "cops" having a gun battle with the Cape Town Metro Cops. :rolleyes:

I would love to move to CT. I've already been looking at some job opportunities. Problem is my entire family and all my friends are still here :(

Oh please, that won't happen. The ANC will cry that National Security, and this will all be swept under the rug. Especially now that the twit apologized to Zuma for his "actions". So the Zuma police state will continue.

Something we haven't really seen, since the ANC has controlled all provinces, is the large amount of autonomy actually granted to the provincial government. Since the DA-led Western Cape does not have to tow any ANC party line they can do what they want as long as it doesn't conflict with any national laws. Since blue-light convoys are not legislated this is easy enough to do. Let's see how the ANC plays after this week of DA led initiatives, including requesting the suspension of one of their MPs for poor behaviour in Parliament.
