Statement by Sizwe Nxasana, Chief Executive Officer:
"The Telkom Group has delivered strong performances in all spheres of its
business, again displaying the ability to compete aggressively, defend and grow its market leadership and extract further efficiencies. Telkom has also invested significantly in its people and the sustainable development of its marketplace and despite a number of complex challenges has succeeded in creating significant value for all its stakeholders."
"Telkom continued to build strength and flexibility into its financial base.
Strong operating cash flows adequately covered capital expenditure requirements and allowed further debt repayment, resulting in a considerably strengthened balance sheet. This enabled the Group to repurchase shares and distribute a large proportion of controllable cash cash to shareholders."
"Telkom"s net profit growth was derived from the acceleration in the uptake of data services, robust growth in Vodacom"s South African customers, efficiency gains and reduced finance charges. Increases in fixed-line prices contributed an estimated R224 million or 10% of the R2.2 billion growth in net profit."
"Telkom is steadily becoming a world-class operator and continues to deliver on
its commitments as a leading driver of transformation and progress in South
Africa. This all-round achievement reflects a business that I believe has found
its balance."

um.....Increases in fixed-line prices contributed an estimated R224 million or 10% of the R2.2 billion growth in net profit." less lines, less affordable, more profit?

what!!!! contradictory or am i just dumb...

The fixed-line business posted modest growth in revenue of 1.6% as a result of low effective tariff increases and declining voice volumes. This was offset by the increasing adoption of data services in consumer and small and medium business markets. Significant progress was made in improving the competitiveness of the fixed-line segment through ongoing rationalisation, improving employee productivity and building a culture of innovation.

Forgive me, but
1. How competitive can a monopoly be?
2. Didnt Sizwe say "Increases in fixed-line prices contributed an estimated R224 million or 10% of the R2.2 billion growth in net profit."? How modest is that?

Prove it. They have not found any balance, only the most effective way to abuse their customers and the best application for their monopoly. How do these peanuts think, and who do they think buys this load of tripe.

Everybody who does NOT live in South Africa LOVES Telkom. They must think the guys at Telkom are business geniuses or something. Unfortunately, Telkom drills us in silence. Bloody propaganda

sadly, since they have gone public, their prime responsibility is to their shareholders and in that respect they are doing an outstanding job - undeniable.
so in light of that, i dont think theres going ot be too much sympathy internationally for what they are doing. They have gone from zero to hero.

however, locally, we can do something about it. If we expose the truth and the manipulation for what they are to the general public, and do it in a sustained and consistent way, a press letter a day, a radio interview a week, a protest on the news, a carte blanche special etc etc etc, things will HAVE to change.

I wonder what would happen if say everyone stopped paying their telkom bill? Would telkom disconnect the country?

Yup.

Things will eventually snowball. This guy tells 10 friends, each of them tell 10 friends... Expose's on sabc 1 & 3, etv reports. I can see it now!

We must just keep at it and not allow this community to fizzle. If MyADSL becomes a non profit company or a CC or whatever, maybe there should be a public spokesperson for every major region of the country. People who run onto rugby fields and charge camera men with huge posters proclaiming the gospel :D

In any case, i am happy with our small contribution to the effort. We just need a few big guns in our army.

Thanks RPM!

Preparing for increased competition
In line with Telkom"s strategy of delivering excellent service to customers at
competitive prices
, Telkom limited its overall tariff increases for its
regulated basket to 0.2% in 2005, well below Government"s target inflation range
of between 3% and 6%. From January 1 2005, international calls decreased on
average by 28% with rates of R1.70 per minute (VAT inclusive) for major
destinations like the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. Prices for
local peak calls increased by 5.5% to 40 cents per minute (VAT inclusive) and
monthly subscriptions increased by 6.3%. From August 1, 2005, Telkom"s ADSL
prices will have reduced by 40.4% for BusinessDSL 512, 29.9% for Home512 DSL and
20% for Home384 DSL since January 2005. Its recently introduced HomeDSL 192 will
also reduce by 17.9% to R270 per month. Telkom has lowered its international
private leased circuits (IPLC) prices by 23% in the financial year. From August
1, 2005 IPLC prices will be lowered by a further 28%. There is still a need to
rebalance certain tariffs to eliminate any cross subsidisation and allow for
effective competition in all areas going forward.

strategy of delivering excellent service to customers at competitive prices WHAAAAAAAT???
Competitive with what?

Most likely, they get to charge reconnection fees and interest.

I agree Peapod, always keep spreading the word, oh yes, and guests please register ;)

Competitive with "undeveloped, developing" coutries I asume, but even then there is no comparisson.

Telkom the antithesis of Robin Hood - take countless billions out of the pockets of typical south africans and redistribute it to their cronies.

Sorry - just realized - the typical south african cant afford a telephone can they, and internet is but a dream.

With Telkoms desire to reacquire shares the situation will only worsen. I'd love to check out Ivy's portfolio - and that of her immediate family.

BTW - Who does a monoploy compete with?

Can this in anyway influence ICASA's report due out this week?

Driving greater adoption of data services across all markets
Telkom grew fixed-line data revenue by 15.6% during the year ended March 31,
2005. In the consumer and small business market, ADSL adoption accelerated as a
result of extensive marketing campaigns, new lower speed ADSL products and
reduced tariffs. These include the expansion of the TelkomInternet powered by
ADSL-service with two reduced-cost, lower speed services, and the launch of a 4
Port Ethernet interface router and a 24-month ADSL contract bundled with a free
modem. ADSL customers increased 188.2% to 58,532 and Telkom Internet subscribers
grew 49.4% to 225,280, of which 10.2% are broadband customers.

new lower speed ADSL products now forgiveme for saying this, but where on g0ds green earth does a company that makes SO MUCH MONEY get away with boasting about greater market penetration by the introduction of a poorer service?

it bloody well better. if it doesnt, then we should start an anti ICASA campaign

No, best I stop reading now. ...me feels an ulcer coming up. :(

I doubt that any company in South Africa's entire history has extorted money from the people of this country to the same criminal degree as Telkom are currently doing.
Doing away with the ‘pseudo line rental’ charge would hardly make a dent in that PBT.
Not as though the Telskum execs will be rationed to dry bread and water or anything for it neither. Still be able to eat Beluga Caviar, Crayfish Thermadore and French Truffles 7 days a week no problem.

Its all our lazy government's fault, telkom is just taking advantage of the situation and any of the crap they write in the press releases are complete bull****.

I'm sorry but i can't believe they can run riot like this. It actually physically makes me sick to my stomach. Thats it i'm going home and cancelling the Telkom Pre Paid line i had in my house in case ADSL ever became affordable and line rental was dropped. No more of this Bull**** Assraping fiasco called Telkom.

Yesterday i have to watch people ToiToi ing on the news saying Jacob Zuma should be our president next after he is BLATANTLY involved in corruption of the highest order and today our government pulls in massive profit via their 35% owned Telkom?

Bull****, thats what this is. BULL****!

The above sentiments are shared wholehartedly by myself and I herewith attempt to calm myself as to the blatent extortion being run by the governmint at the rate of 2.17 bn rand a year (35% of 6.2 bn) and escalating. I AM FAILING DISMALLLLLLY. FSKRRRURKCKKCKKCERRRZ.
