Hey guys.

I've setup my xbox with the whole media center vibe and everything's great.

When trying to play an AVI (like a normal xvid/divx video) it asks me to download the media pack. So I install the media pack and all's good.

But as soon as I disconnect the xbox from the internet and try play another video, it asks me to download again. Rinse, repeat.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nic.

Ok you most likely had a swap out on the xbox. create a second profile and download the optional media with this profile, and it should work.

Alternatively you can go to xbox site and reassign your profile to the new xbox.

Small change in symptoms... re-signed in to live just now and it didn't ask me to download again.

Seems to only want to re-download when I'm not signed in? That's rather inconvenient...

Quite. It's probably taking record of what you're watching :D

j/k

create a new live profile and download the media update on that profile, problems gone

Would you have to change profiles if you want to watch movies?
no, its linked to your console, not profile, as long as the media update was installed on that 360 it will work in any profile (bit more complicated than this but I'm not 100% clear on MS DRM, I just know it works on any profile

Ah okay, so it's not like normal Xbox DLC then where its linked to the profile, that makes a lot better then. It would put my back up if I had to switch profiles (thus stopping downloads etc) to watch movies if I didn't have a dedicated media player.

A while back I went and stayed with my brother. I imported my profile to his console. Then when I got back and brought my profile back to my xbox.. I had the same problem for a little while. I had to sign into Xbox Live to play media files. I had the required media update/codec on my machine, but for some strange reason I had to connect to Live for my machine to pick it up. Also, arcade games I had paid for reflected on my system as only having the demo.. but the minute I logged into my account, the problem was sorted. I don't know what has happened or what I did, but its stopped now!?!?
