Billion.

Thats 6 200 000 000 rand.

Interest on 6.2 billion rand per month at 5% per year is 310 000 000 or about 25 million a month.

25 million a month just on interest.

Maybee we should show governmint where to place the anti-rape device.

Black people are still too afraid of complaining.....

I spoke to my maid yesterday, she is quite old and all what she said: "What will it change, when I open my mouth...they still do what they want"
 
I think for the most part the people who cannot afford the services are the people who voted government into power.. they haven't been informed about the situation and why they pay over R3/minute for a prepaid cell call.. and if they knew even a tenth of what we know, all hell would break loose. The fuss kicked up about the housing problem (another one of gov's non-accomplishments) would look like Noddy's tea party.

I think you are right on the mark MaD!
When millions of illiterate and/or uninformed voters go to the polls, I suspect their votes are made on emotion and not facts.
Past and present governments have always had a say in the media. That is why this forum is so good - it is uncensored (mostly :p).
 
Their votes are based on hollow promises by gov to uplift communities and provide them with what they need. They play on the expectations of the people, they know what ails them and they promise to fix it - but ja, we all know how those stories have played out. I don't see all that much happening to help the poor - which is a pity as thats what government promised them profusely every time.

Government should just come right out and tell the uninformed people that they own 38% of Telkom and they're loving it - that's why 90% of the country doesn't have a phone, and that they're chasing potential investment of untold worth away SA to countries like India, hence potential jobs are going down the toilet like a wet soap on a sheet of glass. How many potential jobs lost every month? Who will ever know while Gov is hoarding everything for themselves and leaving the people who voted for them out in the coldness of financial devastation.
 
Just a thought.

There is a lot in the media recently about aid to Africa from the US and UK, how about petitioning these Governments to consider what the African Governments are doing to help there own people before just handing over huge cheques.

So basically a protest from a group in an African country, that our own Government should be doing more and not just relying on handouts.

It probably will not influence anyone, but may spark some international media attention.

I would not concentrate on Telkom, or internet access alone, but rather on the broader access to information, education which I believe would go a long way in solving a whole host of Africa's problems.

Anyway, just a thought.
 
MaD, how much money is Goverment getting from the shares that are gonna be payed out?
 
It depends, i dont think its a perfect 38% but will try find out, but about 4.3 billion is going to the tax man..

So Government effectively pays nothing for Telkom serives as they get everything back in tax and dividends, and then some.. nice situation to be in.
 
What happened to that leaflet idea last year where you were going to hand out in the townships, MaD?
 
As soon as I have cash handy im gonna print them and hand them out at select high-traffic locations, aka taxi ranks, bus stops and the like.. obviously the people we are targeting won't be swamping the Telkom shops to place orders, so I won't be standing there.
