What to buy PS3 or normal blu ray player

Good day

I dont want to make a mistake again, I rather want to ask some experts. I would like to buy a blu ray player, what must I buy, a sony ps3 or just a normal sony blu ray player. I currently got a 40inc v series sony tv with a sony surround sound system. What is the best options for blu ray that will work best with my setup

Do you own a PC? Can you run a network point to your TV setup? The answer to that would determine whether or not I'd buy a normal (assuming cheaper BR player) than PS3. If you only have interest in watching Blu Ray movies, then just get the player. If you answered yes the the previous question and want to watch more than just Blu Rays then definately the PS3.
 
I own a PS3 and never even reasoned to get a blu ray player. It serves pretty well. I think it is about R1000 more than a blu ray player currently. Even if you only care to watch blu rays and not play games, the ps3 is a media hub, all your images and music as well. Think it would be a good buy if you dont have a steep budget. Other than that. both options would play well on your setup.
 
I'd get the PS3, but mostly because I'm all about the "get lots of stuff in one unit".

However, one VERY important thing to note is that the PS3 does not come with a remote control (only the normal controller).

You can, however get a remote for it for around R300.

The PS3 is a very capable Bluray player; it's about on par with entry-level standalone Bluray players.

I was in the market for a bluray player and opted rather for a PS3. You are virtually getting an HTPC + game console + BD player. In one words fully converged device.
 
As far as an all in one goes, the PS3 is tops at R3899 or so. If you want a player only, look at Dion Wired. They have some Phillips or something on special for R1899 or so. Saw pamphlet last night.

Just figure out what you want to use it for first.

I have this question though, can the PS3 play media files such as .avi?

Firstly yes I have a pc with network point using mtn 3g connection.
It sounds like I must go for ps3.
Is the blu ray quality the same as a normal blu ray player ?
 
Quality is the same. Blu ray is blu ray. It's like comparing a DVD player to say your PC. Quality remains the same.
 
AVI is simply a container. It can contain video and audio of various codecs. If you have the correct codecs in the AVI, then it will be able to play them. Likewise for MP4 or whatever container you like to use.

This is simply not true. Some DVD players produce better audio and video quality than others.

One thing that should be noted is that the PS3 can output digital bitstream; many expensive standalone Bluray players can't even do this.

Cool tks. I realise you can't generalise, but most avi files that come off the net?

I bought some elcheapo Bluray player when I bought the Plasma, think it was R 1400 or around there. It has a USB port and the movies are amazing.

Now what you need to ask yourself is this:

Do I want to pay R [-]5k[/-] 4k for a Bluray player/Game console or do I just want a Bluray player.

I have a Wii so I just bought the Bluray player

Wii+PC > PS3 that is the reason I opted for the Bluray player on it's own. And for that price even if it breaks, I can buy 3 more
But this Akai player has honestly amazed me :)

From a media playing POV, you're a lot better off with PS3 + PC than the above mentioned setup.
