End to “free” cell phones on contracts?

Huh? Are they saying that cell phone operators won't be allowed to provide 'free' cell phones? Arn't they just saying that its a problem with 24 month contracts?

Mabye I don't understand it properly :(

They certainly don't have a problem with comparing us to overseas countries in this regard. It just makes me wonder why they don't do the same kind of comparisons with regards to telkom. They should also rather concentrate on the biggest problem first (telkom) before concerning themselves with areas of the telecoms industry that are not anywhere near as problematic. Icasa get your priorities right!! :mad:
 
It's like the whole renaming of Pretoria thing - divert attention from the big issues by focusing attention to the non-important ones.

WTF happened to ICASA's ADSL report that was supposed to be out this month?
 
What has number portability got to do with contreacts and free cellphones. Are we as consumers not allowed to make decisions for ourselves. Surely when you enter a contract you are aware of the stipulations in such a contract and if you wish to change to another provider you either buy your way out of the contreact or wait for it to end. The choice should be ours to make. Wonder who they are trying to protect with this one?

Why not then look at other similar scenarious, like Telkom with their free modem and 24 month contract, they don't seem to mind that. What about MWeb and their 12 month contract when buying a new pc at certain retailers. Basically you get about a R1000.00 discount when you sighn a contract with MWeb. What's up with that? Afaik there was some kind of ruling on that by the competitions board when MWeb bought out Tiscali, but that did'nt seem to stop them. Eish ag sies man, get it right ICASA. What's good for the goose is good for the ganda (help spelling :confused: ).
 
i can in a vauge flucked up way see what ICASA is getting at (i think), pretty much, vodacom has a lot more dosh than say cellc. so vodacom give you a top of the range free phone cause they can afford it. They also get a customer for at least 2 years (often much longer)

So cause cellc cant afford to give away cellphones like vodacom does... it cant compete.

Couple of other things to consider... without getting the phone we will most probly not have to get those stupid 2 year contacts, and since this ICASA move also entails that you keep your number even if you change operators. We could possibly see month to month tarrifs, and since it will be so easly to swop and change... prehaps a nice price war in tarrif charges.

I dunno... i suppose we will have to see how it pans how.... just my opinion
 
Just an observation here, how important is this really...? Well to put it into perspective, there are quite a few million cellular contract customers versus not so many broadband customers [whatever flavour]...what heresy do I speak - loads more people have cell phones & contracts so it stands to reason that ICASA should be taking the lack of competition amongst the cellular networks seriously - IMO.

Naturally I personally would like to have an equal emphasis placed on the ADSL decree that ICASA should have issued by now...:(
 
South Africa doesnt improve`s it just falling behind every country in the world....if they cut of the free phones on the contracts they will loose big time...
 
I tend to disagree, individual retail chains will probably step up to offer financed phones (over what sort of time frame I don't know), but ICASA is correct in it's conclusions. Imagine for a moment if you had a monthly contract with a cellular provider, as soon as someone offered a better rate you'd switch (without the impact of losing your number).

Sucks for me though cause work pays for my contract.
 
Maybe Telkom bought it from them and are applying their own spin to it, ala Markinor report.

I also reckon ICASA has until the end of the month to make good on their promises. Although we already know whats gonna happen... NOTHING
 
Yes nothing will happen... as nothing usually happens in SA!!!!! except corruption and crime!
 
My 2-cents:

I don't mind a 24 month contract at all with a decent phone.

But I would love to have the alternative of a low cost post-paid 30 days notice contract without a phone.

Then it is up to me - consumer - to decide where and how I'm going to spend my money.

No to prohibiting 24 month contracts with subsidised phones
Yes to a regulated alternative of short term post-paid contracts.
