So I wanna buy a 160 GB Apple Ipod Classic - however before I do ....

I would like to know how reliable it is !

R3K is a lot of smakaroos , but I am willing to pay this because I like my music and miss listening to it.

Want to hurl (interesting choice of word :D) my legit music collection (all in non DRM WMA) onto it.

Does the current 160 Gb Ipods use flash memory or still the "old" style HD technology

ta - yes I am an Ipod noob - hence the questions :D
 
My iPhone 3G (16GB) has been going for over a year now & nothing to report here....except that it's definitely the best quality music you'll ever hear on a portable device. :)

*Oh, and get yourself some Sennheiser earbud earphones - they kick the lama's ass.
 
It's as reliable as any apple tech - It works until it doesn't. Then you reboot it and it's working again.

I bought one a few months back, got my car fitted with an iPod cable and has been smooth sailing save for one or two resets that needed to be done.

It's still HDD tech if memory serves, which is fine except for the few extra seconds needed to get it going on a cold turnon.

Holds roughly one third of my collection of totally legit music.

I think that is going to mean extra work for you.

Definitely HDD (1.8" IIRC). Had mine for a year, no probs, but I wouldn't go for a jog with it. That's best reserved for the Nano/flash memory iPods.

Our new kettle has also been going strong for a few months now. :)
 
I stand to be corrected on this one but i think when you drag your collection into iTunes it will convert the WMA files to whatever you set in the iTunes Preferences (General>Import Settings)

So this will be the biggest hurldle :) for you i think. If you need music on the move this is the best device you can own. My two favourite features are "20h+ battery" and "Smart Playlists".

PS. I've tried to google for decent iPod competitors awhile back but couldn't find much. Do anyone know of a good alterative??!

iTunes can convert them all to 256kbs AAC automatically (Windows version) - this won't take too long and still sound great.
 
The biggest flash units are 64Gig in the Touch - these are HDD. But my friend did use to take hers kitesurfing in a waterproof case, if that gives you any indication of reliability...
