My dad upgraded to a BlackBerry Bold 9700 (MTN) last week and it is of course my job to set everything up and sort out the issues. :D

I must start by saying that I'm clued up about phones and software in general, but this time I have no idea.

The first thing I did after completing the setup wizard was to update all the software and applications on the phone using the PC software. That process went perfectly well. I made sure all the applications I wanted installed (including GTalk and Maps) were selected. But the applications are nowhere to be found on the phone. It's not in the Applications folder or any other menu on the device. This is my first issue.

My second problem is the email. According to manual, in the email setup menu there should be two options: one for normal personal pop3 or imap and the second option for users with Blackberry corporate email accounts. The only option I have is "I want to use a work email account with a Blackberry Enterprise Server", which I assume is the second option I mentioned. So where is the first?

Is the software on the phone corrupted? Or am I an idiot for not being able to figure this out?

Please help my out, I will greatly appreciate it!

As far as I know, he took it out with BIS. But under Services Status, it says:

BlackBerry Internet Service - Connection: not connected
BlackBerry Enterprise Server - Connection: not connected.
Mobile Network - 3G
Mobile Network Provider - MTN

How do I enable BIS if it is available but not activated?
I'll will find out for sure whether he took it out with BIS or not.

I don't know the MTN link, but on Vodacom, there's a link somewhere to the email setup on the Internet; configure the email accounts there, and the service books are pushed out to the phone.

My dad today contacted MTN and they activated BIS. Ho do I go about configuring the phone to actually use BIS? On the moment under 'Mobile Network' it still says MTN.

@alternate: After entering my details at http://mtn.blackberry.com/, I get 'Cannot create account. This Blackberry device is not registered with your wireless service provider.....'

I am still not sure why not having BIS working is stopping me from using GPS. Why can I not access the Applications on the phone?

Most applications need BIS to run. Is there a little B next to your 3G sign, this will tell you if BIS is actually active (remember to take the battery out for a few seconds after they send you the service books). MTN has to configure BIS, you don't do anything.

Ok, it's all sorted out now. Turns out that many applications, like oronte said, needs BIS to run. You can imagine my confusion without this critical piece of information. Thanks for everybody's help!

I have the same problem. Just got a 9700 on Vodacom yesterday and there's no option to setup a normal email account.

What's the number to call to have it sorted? (even though the Vodacom guy told me it'll be sorted today)

I always use the website to manage email, resend service books, etc - http://www.mobileemail.vodafonesa.co.za/

IIRC you can use vodacom4me.co.za to activate BIS.

What's the number to call for Vodacom to get them to activate BIS?

(what happened to my previous post?)
Nothing?

Sorry bwana but I think the forum software is a bit buggered. Clicking a thread title shows no new posts but clicking the "show new posts" button does. :|

I'm sorry, I have no idea what number to call if you're on Vodacom. We emailed a the guy at MTN who set up the contract. I'm sure someone will know though. Or it will be activated automatically.

Hah had same issue, BB support line for MTN is dead so I called the data support line and got them to activate it. Next and this I had to figure out is that u go back to the routing tables in thr advance menu of options and and wait while it retrieves info then select it and subscribe and then it connects and the BB comes alive

Agree with ^

Just remove the back cover, remove the Battery, wait a few seconds, then re-insert the Battery and the phone will boot up and register itself on the MTN BIS network.

Before doing the above, you need to contact SP support centre and request BIS activation, they will advise time before activation kicks in, thereafter do the above, and your apps will automagically come alive.

Shrug that's what I did. Was activated by call centre for a week but never worked till I checked route tables and clicked subscribe. It basically takes u to the mtn.blackerry.com page thereafter

Op, your title includes gps but u didnt ask any questions regarding it. So il ask on your behalf. . . .does the 9700 hav voice guided gps? And is it network dependent because il be getting the phn on an mtn contract but il be using a prepaid vodacom sim in it. Will this cause any issues with the gps?
