My iphone's glass was cracked totally, although the lcd was fine. I thus decided to order the parts of ebay to fix it myself (didn't really have the money to get it fixed by a pro) and after 2 months of struggling I finally received it today!
Downloaded the youtube instruction video, started opening everything up and then I %$#!@#@% it up. Managed to damage the LCD. Now I have a cracked iphone with a grey screen with stripes and a black corner at the bottom.
Just a heads up to everyone out there, if you are not sure, rather have your phone fixed by people who know what they are doing.
Will have to get it fixed now from ifixipods or someone. Urgh.
There is no way I can go back to my old phone.

+1 for having the balls to try it
-2 for screwing it up :(
How much will a pro charge?

This is from xpressfix.co.za (closest to me) :
The cost of the LCD for the iPhone 3G is R1150-00.
We usually don't install parts that are not supplied by us, but in this case we will do it for you but will no be able to warrentee that part of the repair. That will cost an extra R150-00 for parts and labour to install the part.
So total cost now to have everything fixed from them (keep in mind I supply the one part) is R1300

Why not try replace the LCD yourself? There's sure to be spares for it from the original place you got the other bits from.

I ordered the other part from ebay and had to wait 2 months. And also, I don't have the balls anymore to try and fix it myself.

lol - it was actually my brother's phone. He dropped it and then gave it to me. But i'm sure there's got to be a frisbee app out there!

Seems like a decent site! Don't see that they offer the repair service though, only the parts. Also I'm going to use someone closeby.

Where are you located? My uncle repairs phones - he has years of experience. He's based in Pretoria.
You get an iPhone screen & digitizer assembly from Bidorbuy (http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/20259604/New_iPhone_3G_Touch_LCD_Screen_Glass_Panel_Digitiz er_combined.html) or megagraphix and follow the steps here:

Phone was fixed by Marc from xpressfix (http://www.xpressfix.co.za) in Somerset West. Very good service, very deurmekaar workshop. ;-)
