Telkom’s ADSL not up to speed

Well, as far as I am aware Telkom's pricing and services are highly competitive and they compare very well to overseas offerings.

This is what Telkom has told the world and we should stick with that. Why would a company that makes R6bn profit a year lie to its clients and shareholders?
 
Pieter Uys, COO of Vodacom, announced that this service, based on HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology, will compete favourably on speed and the pricing structure will be competitive.

Competitive with what ?

If we're talking 2mbs here, then what will the data allowance be and at what cost ?

If it is going to be competitive by South African standards, then I guess we can expect a 3gig cap and R1000 a month, enabling you to go past your cap in a few hours ;)

If it's going to be competitive by international standards, we can expect 100gig and R300 a month.

Somehow, my pessimistic side thinks the former will be the case and that the latter is the stuff of pipe dreams ...
 
Yeah, South African companies should mention these things. Are you competitive on an International level or third world South African level? This will really put things into perspective for people.

"Oh, they are competing locally, so we can try and sell our kidneys for the downpayment on the deposit"

You're quite right. I think it's time we put pressure on companies to specify what 'competitive' means.
 
Good article rpm, keep them coming. Having said that I must also say that everytime I read an article written on this subject I say to myself "Here's another one does government even listen to us".
I also say "The one who shouts the loudest gets helped first.", and you are shouting extremely loud, getting your article on Google news, so we should be help quite soon. Thanks.
 
Great article and the google news listing is a very good idea RPM. Not to be the spelling police - but now that myadsl is getting great exposure through google news: "bandwidth simply loose out" should be "bandwidth simply lose out"

The government is wide awake, nobody needs to tell them that South Africa is light years behind the rest of the world in every single aspect, they know it. Even when it comes to corruption 1st world countries are much more subtle about it, over here it is apparent as daylight. :mad:
They are scoring big time through telkom, and no one would give that up willingly. Why did the legalisation of the SNO take so long? If they really wanted to get SA up to speed, that is a vital starting point.

IMO government is fast asleep - well certainly her Ivyness likes to kip-out in the parliament offices - or so I hear...

Even if government is somewhat aware, it requires pressure to get them to get their priorities in order, and IMO advancing ICT in SA & making Internet Access afordable will provides lots of jobs for all South Africans, but there is no time to waste - e.g. SA is losing out on Call Centres which are going to India etc...

Well you could argue that SA and Nigeria etc are World Leaders in corruption - SA is actually really good at something...:D
