I have an iPhone 3g. Think it was jailbroken. Hooked it up to my laptop using latest iTunes to do a restore so iTunes first downloaded the latest firmware and thne did the update and restore. No errors on iTunes or iPhone but im stuck on this screen http://rickardandersson.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/bricked.jpg
What do I do now?
P.S I have tried restoring many times but no luck. My iTunes just shows an iPhone under devices but thats it. I can't do anything.

Hi,
Your device is in emergency call only mode and is German/Austrian. Nifty.
You can try putting it in DFU mode and then restoring the firmware:
Follow: http://limitededitioniphone.com/how-to-put-the-iphone-into-dfu-mode/
or: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

Use at your own risk.
Edit: The Cydia app on the device is a clear sign that it was jailbroken. However a full restore should fix things - even if you have to restore a previous version of the firmware.

Cmon, there has to be a way to fix it??? i didnt pay for it. A buddy of mine bought it and he had it working but he couldnt make or receive calls because the previous owner tried nobody knows what with it. I did see an app "Cydia" on it. But i decided before i use the phone let me restore it so it will be nice an fresh. So now i seem to have stuffed it up. It was working. But now after the update, jammed.

Tried all that already. Still no luck.

Have you tried a previous version of the firmware?

It is also possible that it wasn't only jailbroken, but also unlocked from a network lock. In this case it won't recognise your sim card and it won't activate through iTunes. Of course this is just a guess.
And finally check out
http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm
for instruction on getting out of the modes, which has the following information:
Kick the iPhone out of simple restore/recovery mode and make it reboot.
1. Connect iPhone and your PC/Mac, quit iTunes.
2. Hold Start/Sleep and Home for 10 seconds (I always count 100, 200, 300,...)
3. Let go of Home button but keep holding Start/Sleep until the Apple logo on the iPhone screen shows up.
4. Let go of Start/Sleep, the iPhone will boot
Kick the iPhone out of DFU mode and make it reboot. I always disconnect iPhone and Mac/PC but can be done even when connected.
1. Hold Start/Sleep and Home until the Apple logo shows up on the iPhone screen. This may take up to 30-60 seconds.
2. Let go of both buttons, the iPhone will reboot.

Waansin, really appreciate the help. Thanks.
I have tried everything you recommend so far. Still no luck. I have even tried a restore from another pc. Same thing.
I havent tried a previous version firmware, want to try that now. I see iTunes downloaded 3.1.3 before doing the restore and update. So which version should i go down to and where can i get it from?

A quick Google search and I found this site that links to all the firmware on Apple's sites:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750
They actually link to "edgesuite.net" which is a content delivery service used by Apple.
I would try 3.1.2 and then go down from there. But Keeper has a point. It may just need to be activated. It may also be stuck in the Recovery mode.
If all fails, then contact an Authorised Apple service centre for advice.

found these pages, dunno if it will help....
http://iphoners.org/itunes-thesimcard-inserted-in-this-iphone-doesnot-appear-tobe-supported/
http://iphoners.org/how-to-activate-iphone/
the last link has this little info:
Important: If you are migrating your current phone number to iPhone, activation may
take from several hours to a day and migration of your number may take several days, depending on your location and previous carrier.
