SYBARITIC WARRANTY FAIL

So i bought a Vantec 2.5" USB IDE HDD enclosure from Sybaritic in January. it stopped working in March. I sent it through to them and ive just heard back from them now.

this is what they say: Warranty void due to surge damage

Its a USB device how the hell am i suppose to give it surge damage? command the USB port to send a surge? do i have any re-course in this matter?

this is last thing i will ever buy from Sybaritic and i will advise anyone to not buy from them.
 
crap i just ordered my router through them

nah dude, don't worry, many people on here have ordered many different things, most of the time, all has been well.


GT, have you phoned them? spoken to someone on their side?

also, WTA, power surges do happen, and if that hits your pc, i'm sure it can affect whatever is connected via USB. Perhaps invest in a UPS?

it was plugged into a laptop running from a battery for the duration i was using it. how is it possible it could get a power surge? basically i have spoken to guys via email and theyre like tough titty.

THIS IS SUCH BS. surge is just a cop out so they dont have to replace my device.

Im just going to move my business elsewhere.
 
Surely if there was a surge it would have left some trace on the board or where the connector sits on the board. Ask them for photos of the proof that it was a surge. Tell them you want to see the tracks or ic's or whatever that's fried!
 
How did the drive not break with the surge? Or is the drive dead as well?

The problem is that when a product is returned, it goes straight to Sybaritic's suppliers so Frontosa/Rectron (or whomever it was purchased from) would've determined if it was surge damage.

the drive works fine. and they sent it to the manufacturers who sent it back saying surge damage. how that is possible i dont even know.
 
I've used Sybaritic on many occasions and this sounds like a raw deal if what you say is true.
 
What is the current rating on that enclosure?

I find it highly suspect that the enclosure would die, but the USB controller would be ok.
