How does 1 in 6 seats unsold (62 days before the first game) equal empty stadium? Trust me, these tickets will sell out, over the counter sales start on 15 April. Also, the return on the WC is long term, increased tourism, plus better facilities for South Africans.

Why would tourism increase after the WC? The fans have spent all their money just getting here and seeing the soccer, with the inflated airline and accommodation prices... and when they experience the standard service levels here, they'll never come back! :p
 
Quarter of the tickets are still to be sold and here I am desperately trying to get my hands on a few more tickets for Joburg or Durban :(

Do you not think that the over-the-counter sales process will see the majority of remaining tickets go to the folk with no access to internet?

Anyway, there is no way that FIFA or the LOC will allow the stadiums to "appear" empty on world television.

That's what I don't understand... try and go onto the FIFA website and they show a few tickets left for two of the random games (I'll look which ones now and post them - ok you can't any more as that phase is now closed) and yet they are talking about half empty stadiums!

Sorry, I just read the News24 article that said that 500 000 tickets are still to be sold. I think the tournement capacity is about 3 million, thus my 1 in 6 statement. As for 'all the big games being sold out', News24's article says that in phase 5 every game expect the final will have tickets. So, better there quick on 15 April!

As for tourism, think long term. Guy gets here, see's it's a nice place, come back in 3 to 10 years. This time with his wife and kids.

who the hell wants to see hondoras play in any case :D, I didn't even know such a country existed before the WC
 
Why do people think every world cup game will be packed? There are some rubbish teams playing other rubbish teams, nobody wants to see that so expect some games to be empty.

Yes there are some 'rubbish' games, but people will buy tickets anyway, just to say that they were at the World Cup. Of course, these will be the last tickets sold.
 
I would buy tickets for any game, but they make the process to buy it to difficult. Why couldn't they just sell through computicket.
 
Give the tickets away to the poor. You know the people who have forgone houses, infrastructure etc for this event.
 
Fifas website in phase 4 "first come first serve" only showed what was available apparently, but I applied and still got rejected. Applied and got rejected in an earlier phase as well. So you know what, **** them and their ticket buying obstacle course.
 
Heh, and they say the mistake was becaue they were selling the tickets online? I call BS . They clearly stated the opening game will cost you R490 MINIMUM , where most of the local soccer watchers are used to paying R20 . Helloooooo, what did FIFA expect? Ripping off the local supporters in a poor country is not going to get your tickets sold.

FIFA is the arses in this picture, no one else.
 
My understanding of empty is zero.

If you can't afford a R140 ticket you clearly have other more important priorities to use your money on.

The LOC budget has been set assuming 60% of tickets sold.
