Verbatim External HDD not showing up in my computer

Bought a verbatim 1tb hdd today. Has a usb 2.0 connection. Came home read the manual plugged it in to my one computer and it installs and everything but I can't find it in my computer or portable media devices.

Im running XP sp3.

Please help as I only have a total of 12 gigs left between my two desktops.
 
Does it show up by disk management?

Maybe it needs to be formatted or just needs a drive letter to be assigned.

Agreed. Either that or the USB port you're using is a bit faulty. Try another port if it doesn't show up in your Disk management.
If that doesn't work try another USB cable - I highly doubt it's an OS problem.

Are you able to use other USB devices on your machine? If not, you may need to change your registry:
Set this entry to 3 : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor

Hi, I've got the same problem. The External HDD works fine on my laptop but it doesnt on the desktop and
other devices do work on the usb port. Where do I find Disk Management?
 
Right click my computer and choose 'manage'. It's there on the left.

What does this do? Allow more external storage devices? Even if I use mine one at a time, the one drive does not work on my desktop but is quite happy on all the laptops...

Weird incompatibility or something. I end up accessing it as a shared drive via another computer. Bit of a mission... :(

This registry entry is just enable or disable the USB ports on your machine. It's mostly used as a security measure on work networks to prevent viruses.
If it's set to 3, all USB ports will work. I'm not sure what the other values will do.

Maybe have a look at see what the value is on your machine. If it's not 3, change it and see if makes a difference
 
Pre-assembled external drives usually come formatted AFAIK, and they install software automatically when plugged in.

Guantanamo, got another PC to test it on?
