The only reason I would want to upgrade from the MKI would be the closer focusing distance. But otherwise I'm happy with the MK1!!

I hear you , I find it a great portrait lens but often find I'm too close.
Last Saturday I used it extensively for "Thunder Over Louisville" - best air show and fireworks I've ever seen and all that on one day.

Orm's once told me the f4 is a tad sharper than the f2.8 .....
I love my f4, but I bought it because I couldn't afford the f2.8 at the time. Often I wish I had it for the narrower depth of field - blur the background more.
The main advantage of the f4 is the weight - significantly lighter than the f2.8.
On the other hand, the f2.8 has the advantage of the narrower depth of field, AND it works brilliantly with the 1.4x and 2x converters, which don't work with the f4 (autofocus stops workin at apertures smaller then f5.6)
If I could sell my f4 today, I would.

The f/4 IS is sharper than the f/4 non-IS and both the f/2.8 and f/2.8 IS (except through a TC, the f/2.8 models are better for some reason). Photozone tested all four, and even on the 8MP body, the difference is there. That said, all of them are excellent, the new model just reaches a new level of excellence.

The f/4 works just fine with the 1.4TC but you do need a 1D body to use it with a 2x.
Even when I get the f/2.8 I'm still keeping the f/4. It's too nice to get rid of.

I just want a 70-200 that is weather sealed and that means one of the IS ones. The f/4 IS is sealed but it's a bit too much of a duplication.I wouldn't mind owning both
