HELP...Laptop : What's the best i can get for R3-4k?

Edit : Or maybe 4-5k...

My 2 year old Dell laptop just died on me.... should be the motherboard.

Guess it's time to get a new laptop, as poor as i am right now.

All of you experts out there, what's the best option i have for R3-4k?

Can i re-use the parts i have in my old laptop , besides motherboard eg. hard disk, operating system, what else can i reuse?

The big brands usually start around R4500 for notebooks... so I'm thinking you'll probably get the best value in that price range by rather looking at Gigabyte or Asus models.
I must rush out now and don't have pricing on me, so if someone reads this before I get back, hook a brother up mos :)

First question is whats wrong with your current one? Perhaps it can be fixed? Where are you?

Between R3-R4k, you have the options of either a netbook, or a Celeron Notebook. My money is on the GIGABYTE Q1580L, for under R4K. Your other option is a good demo Dual Core, or for R1000 more a Samsung R519 Pentium DC....
 
Compaq 610/615 models are also good and around that price range.

You can use:
- the memory modules (upgrade the memory depending on what you have)
- HDD (put it in a 2.5"external USB/eSATA case as a second external drive)
- CPU (upgrade or flog it)
- LCD/TFT screen (flog it)
- plastics (sell as spares)

Motherboard is the issue.

Thanks every one for giving me your input... i'm looking at the specs now..

However, nobody responded on whether the old parts of my laptop can be reuse in the new laptop , besides the motherboard?
eg. hard disk... im sure i cant buy a laptop with no hard disk, so can a laptop have 2 slots for harddisk?
how about the OS? Can i buy a laptop without OS and use the ones i had on my old laptop? (i have the product key)
processor?? and what else??

if some of it is reusable, where would be the best place to get one??
p/s - in capetown or surrounding areas.

Can't tell what parts of your current laptop are re-usable without the spec...
 
Just about every laptop will have an OS already loaded, so cant reuse that. Cant reuse processor either, you may get lucky with ram though. But at R4k, most laptops will only have 2 slots for ram, which means you cant use that either. And at that price you dont get laptops with two hard drive bays either. But I suppose you could buy an external enclosure for it.
Otherwise it can be a fancy doorstop. Sucks, but thats the reality of laptops.
 
You didn't have the 3-year on-site support contract? Had my LCD, mobo and palmrest replaced on my 2-year old Dell.

Have you tried Gigabyte brand? Was hoping for something like Dell or HP , will that be possible?

No, i got mine from overseas. I am actualy new in SA, therefore am a bit lost of the prices here. It is on the high side though compared to where i'm from :(
 
I can personally vouch for the HP 615. Good build quality and good performance for its price.

Have used HP, Dell, Asus, Gigabyte and Samsung, and Sony and Mac, and Acer at various levels, either my own user or for customers etc. HP/Dell are comparable in terms of build quality, but Sony/Apple are better. In terms of cost/performance/feature ratio, Gigabyte, Asus, and Samsung easily win. They really are great notebooks for the price. For the casual user on a budget, I would go for one of those three - and recommend the Q1850....
 
The price from Rebeltech is right :D I ordered myne there..

They seem to have a history of getting a certain brand dirt cheap for some reason... I bought A Fujitsu and Asus EEEPC for a fraction of the cost from other competitors ..

@ OP Gigabyte is a well known brand o_O
