Datacard Stolen ! What are my replacement options

My Laptop along with my Datacard was nicked - i replaced the machine at the same price but i am offended by the R2999 price tag from Vodacom for a new datacard

What are my options?

Hi you were able to replace the Laptop at the same price , i suggest
for you to replace the data card at the same price - take out
another contract with vodacom.. It will be FREE on package
exact price as what you orignally got it at, but Do not Forget to add insurance from Vodacom this time. :)

Return your laptop and sign up for the new computer deal......or try bumping one yourself
 
Its pricey for a datacrad - i was more intrested in knowing if i could get a merlin Card from novatel and not worry about the price form Vodacom or rather upgrade my phone and use it as a modem !

The Laptop they offering is crappolla ! IMO

why do i want to pay another contract - i already have one to pay ?

2700 - thats a quater of my F*(**(*(*( laptop !
 
I see MTN have a package for R67 a month where you get a free merlin card. That could be an option for you - except you end up with another 2 year contract. At least you have twice the chance of getting coverage :)
 
Stu, Sorry to hear of your loss!!

If its any help i have the SE V800 which i use pretty exclusively as a modem. Generally works really well. Use it with the usb cable at home and bluetooth on the laptop.
Have read about the various issues with the dashboard am happy i dont have to get that working.
Battery life not great (although better than i had expected on reading the early reviews here) and certainly outlasts my laptop.
Can get one for R99 on the weekender, and then obviously get the free weekend minutes as well.
 
Sidelong - any idea if the MTN datacard is network locked - can they do that ?

I would be happy to pay the 804 over 24 months = 1608

2700 - 1608 = 1096 !!!!!!!! Thats quite a saving !!!

Anyone got advice on weather i can get a Datacard from mtn and use it on the vodacom network ? Surely the sim card is the acess not the hardware ?

Any ideas ?
 
Stu - we have an MTN-recommended datacard (see thread on MTN EDGE modem http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=22742) and I used it yesterday with a Vodacom SIMM card.

This was NOT the one in the advert, but as you say I would presume it's not network locked. These days it seems contract hardware is not locked - they are getting your $$ anyway so they don't care what you do with it :)

However - there does not appear to be any stock of the Merlin Novatel card yet. Our local MTN shop was quite baffled by this "non-phone" contract and had no idea when one would be arriving - only to say "next month".

"So, on Friday then?"
"No, sometime during next month."
"Oh."

And that is technology SA ;p

Heres a good deal for you and everyone else.Get the Vodafone mobile connect card on a Family Top up contract for R179 cash and you pay R144.50 pm subs(Includes R135 airtime).You can ad a Data bundle if you want.

This deal is available at all Vodashops
 
My 2c's:

Find a friend / family member that's in need of a contract. Let them take the weekender special with the datacard.Or any of the datacard contracts.

Get hold of a cheapy phone and swap them for the data card.

They're up and running, and so are you.

You are wrong.With Family to up you are getting back R3240 airtime BACK. :eek:

You can use your R135 airtime for data which gives you 72megs on Family Top Up

Which should cost you 60c/MB - so it's worth R43.20. So the contract costs R101.30. Which is R2431 over 2 years for the datacard, plus you have the hassle of swapping SIMMs all the time ... LOL :)

When you buy a 3G contract.The store must give you a 64K card :)
