Upgrading of HP ML370 G3 server

Hi all

The server in question have a SCSI RAID.

Is it possible to upgrade it from SCSI RAID to SATA RAID? Even though the SATA HDD's have to be in an external enclosure?

The server's motherboards have PCI-X slots, and not PCI-Express.

In short: Good luck.

External bays are not cheap (generally in the R30k+ area for a 12bay 2U shelf) then you would have to find a SAS PCIx controller with external ports (or get a SAS expander that has external ports). Once that is all done, the next trick is to always make sure the DAS shelf is on long before the server boots (assuming you want to boot off the DAS) or face having arrays look/act funny.

Another option might be to get an iSCSI hba and knock together a "cheapish" iSCSI system
 
Biggest question that has to be asked is: do the drives fit into a backplane (I.E are they currently hotswap drive bays)?
If there is no backplane then the next challenge is just getting an appropriate PCI-X card and cables.
SATA may not be the best solution when working with PCI-X (I've seen newer SATA drives not working too well with older SATA and especially SAS RAID cards)
