Hi guys, so with the uncapped war finally started, I am planning on moving away from telkom and going to go for a uncapped account for my 384kbps line, but before I do that, I would like to find out from some people who have been using uncapped 384 accountd about their experiences...

So how is the shapping for the 384 accounts? I heard the 4mb guys got shapped pretty bad and this continues even afterhours for some ISP, is this the case for 384? And are there throttling on 384 line, don't think I will pull 100+ gb like some of the other guys, but it is good to find out just in case :)

Are all ISP's uncapped account able to use news servers?

Lastly, can anyone recommed some of the better ISPs for an uncapped 384 account?

Thanks!

I have an Afrihost & MWEB account...

Afrihost seems to keep changing the throttling limit. Which irritates me...

MWEB - been fine so far hey - throttled during the day though sometimes which is a bit iffy...

To be honest, i truly believe that us 384k users should be uncapped, unthrottled... what's the absolute worst we can do? 200GB TOTALLY MAX? :P

Most us poor 384k users can do IF we got full line speed all day is about 80-100GB.

Atom0101, I don't think you will find an ISP that doesn't have both positive and negative experiences with the 384k accounts. It is a good idea to browse through the "feedback" threads and make your own judgements. Best to look at posts before Sunday though because of the Seacom problems so the recent posts on the threads might not be reflective of the true performance of the accounts.

i'm on 384 uncapped with MWEB...not getting anywhere close to 39k/s in fact during the day i get about 5-11k and at night about 20k max if i'm lucky... uncapped just means download all you can but we determine the speed you get it at ....false advertising?

At least the limit is going up - which is positive.

Shaped you mean? Browsing should still be very good and speed test should indicate something very close to your line max?

Even less, 105.7GB :D

yeap...havent been on torrents for a week now with work being so busy, tried tonight and Im throttled into the ground as if its business hours. Freekin ridiculous....now I cant download anything, I can't connect as all the torrents have 0% health.

Im currently on 19.4 gb, which is minute tbh - worst of all I was so preoccupied with projects that I forgot to unsubscribe to Afrihost on 25 April :( So i have to stick with them for ANOTHER month!

@valaskjalf ....everyone is havin probs at the moment. ISPs are suffering cos of Seacom problem...

@ bradlesliect

as you can see I havent been on here in a while either lol so Im not even aware of the Seacom thing :P

I agree, 384k throttled is ISDN or even dial-up,

@atom0101.....if you are patient and have toleance go for uncapped else go for capped

Throttled: My 384kbps account is Throttled to 384kbps throughput max at all times...
Shaped: Certain types of traffic on my shaped 384kbps mweb uncapped account will receive priority over others. HTTP/Browsing over P2P.

Major difference.

The performance on these mweb uncapped accounts are quite something imo. Been going crazy on mine - running out of stuff to download, quickly. I'll sure as heck be ending up close to that ~100GB max this month. NNTP servers working fine on my account - Sure it is shaped, but that leaves me enough headroom for fastfast browsing. Lovin' it!

Whats the gaming like on 384kb uncapped.

Very very unpredictable. They used to say "ideal for gaming", then took it off their website. Since then it's gone from barely usable to highly erratic. When we raise it, they tell us to wait for a gaming product or get business uncapped and spend more because gaming is "not prioritised". You'd think they would know this before taking our money.

Excluding this week with the SEACOM problems , my MWEB account 384 is pretty good for gaming. usually get 20-30ms on CSS IS servers. got around 400-500 WOW Europe servers.

Sitting on 40 gigs with AH uncapped. Been a heavy download month for me. Speeds are still good, downloaded some more last night. Tried gaming, PSN - Killzone 2, all played well. Not sure if it's stable or not, played for about half an hour to test.
