Swap DDR400 for DDR800 - is this possible?

Hey guys,

I'm pretty stupid when it comes to PC Hardware, I only have 2 memory slots on my computer, both filled with 1Gb each, and I took my Memory stick to the Matrix today, wanting to know if I can upgrade "this 1Gb stick" to 2GB, and I was told that you do not get 2Gb ram in DDR400 sticks, fine....

So I resorted to ask you guys if theres a way around this issue, I would like to upgrade my computer to 4gb ram, thus, having 2x 2Gb sticks. The motherboard is an Asus 3.20 Two core motherboard - pentium 4 (By this meaning, when I open task manager and click on Performance, I see two blocks at the top, not 4), so I cant believe that it actually cant take better memory sticks than the DDR400's.

Can you guys please help me with a way around this.

I'm running Adobe CS4 on it etc, so I need to upgrade the ram substantially?
 
Your motherboard more than likely will only support 2GB max, check the manual.
 
If your motherboard uses DDR then it can't use DDR2. Simple as that. The exception was an ASRock motherboard which used both. You've pretty much reached the limit of your upgrades then, if you want better performance and more RAM you'll have to get a new motherboard.

BTW that's a single core P4 with Hyperthreading.

Yes. That means new case, motherboard, memory, CPU, and Operating System (unless the OP has a retail version). Additionally printers because the old ones don't play nice with Win7 and whatever other peripherals aren't compatible.

Thanks guys, I'll look into it, not really keen on replacing the motherboard and was hoping to find a way around this... but with those prices I could just as well buy a new computer... which is not a bad option, all the software is retail versions, so it wont be aproblem installing it, the only issue is losing all those software preferences etc etc.

Oh well... Does anybody know of any good computer specials? Typically a 2.8 Ghz Dual Core and Higher, 500Gb Hard Drive, 4Gb ram etc. Not into gaming, more of a work horse, I guess.
 
What must that amount include? Can you sell your current system to fund it? You can really get something decent for that btw.

By the way, I see that theres a pcint.co.za sticker on the memory stick, so this whole system probably came from there, i took it over from my gf about 2 years ago.

Of course I would want to sell the current system, but I dont have to rely on that funding for the new purchase.

Ive got a 22 inch screen already, with Windows Vista Business, so a box only would be nice...

A R2500 rig will already be much faster than the one you're currently using.
 
I dont know which one to choose, are there any compatibility issues or upgrading issues, upsides, downsides to AMD or Intel? Almost like the one I'm having now?
 
Not really. It hardly matters which one you choose. I would say get yourself a dual-core with at least 4gb RAM. My preference is Intel, but that's just me. I can build you a PC if you want.
 
Where are you from? Then I'll probably go for intel, remember, I'm a staunch Apple supporter and not really into this PC thing, but I have to this time round... You guys gotta help me
 
Pretoria. Since you're an Apple supporter, I just thought I'd tell you, you can run OS X on a PC. It's what I do. It's the best.

Anyway, as for your PC, what I suggest is you tell me your budget, I'll suggest what parts to buy, you buy them and I'll slap it together for you, you can load the OS, apps etc. In fact if you want I'll just suggest something and you can build it yourself if you're into that. Either way.
