How does the forumites feel over the two brands of football.

Will you promote park the bus anti football tactics to win a game?

Everybody knows where I obviously stand on the issue, i would imagine the Arsenal faithful would probably agree, well some of them.

Win an important match by making all 10 players sit in the box and boot everything that comes in, never attack EVER to get a positive result.

Or have confidence in your style, go out and win the game.

I think its something worth chatting about after last nights game. We saw two clubs with extremely different views on how the game should be played.

Views..?

sorry mate. rather look bad and win than look good and lose. i doubt barca won ALL their games over the last 18 months or so by going out and playing beautiful football. sure, it's great to watch, but i'd take a scrappy, hard-fought 1-0 win over a game of 'well how many passes will it take us to score this time'.

But Barca didn't win.

Horses for courses. If you are 1-0 up after the first leg and going away to a strong team, you park a bus and force out a win. It's like test cricket for me, on day 5 if you need to chase down 400 to win, you're 3 down and the pitch has craters the size of Mars on it, you close up shop and push for that draw!

Then you dont know your football.

Barca has never played defensive football. Not once did they camp 10 players in the box.

Since before Cruyff days, that is not the clubs style. Coaches have been FIRED for being defensive minded.

Rather lose attacking, never change your style. Many will point out that is why Barca lost, but that is what the club was built on and we will continue playing this way.

But Barca didn't win.

They were the only ones trying to win the game last night.

They had no choice...

I wouldve supported your view pre camp nou slaughter of arsenal

LoL

If Barca were the ones who were leading with a 2 goal deficit, their game wouldnt have changed.

Meh, both teams play on the same pitch with 11 players each. Same ref, same conditions. Same rules.

If one team decides that parking the bus on the 18yrd line is the best way to progress then so be it. To Inter's credit they did win their previous game 3-1, so they did what they needed to do, especially it being an away leg against an extremely attacking and dangerous Barca.

Barca knew they needed 2 unanswered goals(it's not like they went into the game not knowing what they had to do.) Inter knew this as well, and decided on a game plan that would hopefully give them the desired result. It could have back fired on Inter, if Barca had scored more than 1 goal.

and as cr@zydude said. Same happens in cricket, its up to the other team to come at you and get what they need. (Be it 10 wickets or in Barca's case 2 goals)

Inter just shut Barca out and Barca were forced to make hundreds of meaningless passes on the edge of the area trying to find a way through.

I am glad Barca lost (now for real to win la liga) but I am not a fan of parking the bus, but 2 goals up and down to 10 against Barca you would be CRAZY not to park it!! If you can handle the pressure for 70 mins then kudos, but you are spoiling what was suppose to be an AWESOME tie.

I get very irritated when teams stick 10 behind the ball, but a Chelsea fan put it very well recently. If you know a team off the park its your best chance of taking something from the game... It gets the results, but maybe won't pull all the neutrals to watch them week in week out.

Why do you hate Barca so much? Do you support Real Madrid in La Liga?

Always thought of you as an Arsenal supporter? A lover of the beautiful game?

I think not.

That is why football has never really appealled to me... in rugby you can get defensive but never to the extent they did in that game last night.

And yes, as a sports fan, i did watch it. I agree that they had to get defensive after going one player down and having a first round advantage.

coming from you, one can take that with a pinch of salt. my knowledge of football is not in question.

however, your lack of it is apparent: the 4-3-3 system you seem to lavishly claim as 'TOTAL FOOTBALL' all the time is adapted from the very versatile 3-5-2 system deployed by Ajax in the late 60's and early 70's. It is not a creation of Cruyff's. He played in that very system.

3-5-2 is a very useful system in a few senses - where in the case of an injury (in those days they employed the use of 2 subs 1 of which was a goalie), the system could be utilised as a defensive minded system as well and assert 'damage limitation' if required, say in the case of sending offs. down to 9 men, and any team, including the cantera-shagging barca team, would be foolish not to adopt a more stable system.

don't be naive and assume for one second that teams are not coached to defend as well as they attack. if the need arises, as you have put it many many times, coaches and tactics are all superior now. it would be daft to assume barca cannot adopt a more defensive approach. but we are dealing with you here.

i don't know why you always bring arsenal fans in to back you up, because we more than most know the fate that lay in attacking all the time, in a top league.

barca are renowned for playing attractive flamboyant football, but they have been known to be defensive, under coaches and win things locally, only to be sacked - as you have correctly stated and then contradicted yourself by saying theyve never played defensive football ever.

...yah.

I know very well who the father of Total football is and how it came about. You trying to say i implied that Total Football is a formation of 4 3 3. hahahaha

...and you call me naive.

I dont know but with you I always have to literally spell my posts out so you can understand it.

Barca play a certain way, they have always played this way for an extremely long time. Since the Pep days and before. In Barcelona you are expected to win, but not only that, you are expected to win with style. Never ever must the team play anti football, they must stay true to their style and never change for anybody.

You are very much mistaken and no very little if you think any Barca team in history has used anti football tactics like what was on display last night. Coaches have try'd to change Barca's style of football but failed, it has even gone as far as to see supporters boo the management and players of the club for trying to change the style in which Barca plays. I wont expect you to know this because Google can only tell you so much.

Still hurting is it?

Winning a game 3-1 is hardly anti-football. If I was 3-1 up against 'the best attacking team in the world' I'd do exactly the same. Good tactics. Which is why Inter won. Just like when United kept you guys completely shut out over 180 mins in 08 ;)

I dont need to defend my team. I will take a loss like that any damn day of the season. We played well and stayed true to our style.

Well done to Inter at the end of the day.

Then why are you still harping on about it?

Get over it. There's always next season. Maybe United can knock you out again ;)

Anti football my arse... TBH perhaps FIFA should change the structure of the game... no home and away matches... just ONE match at one location... you go there to win it or go home simple as that... Inter did it whilst at home so why risk losing 2-0 away from home when the only needed to lost 1-0 to progress?

If they played every match as if it would be their last then no amount of defensive play would be beneficial.

Why that would take away the magic of the cup. Having two legs means you need to plan strategicly how to approach both legs.

Personally this anti football label is the biggest bs someone ever came up with. Defensive football is not anti football, defense is as much part of football as is attacking. It always gets thrown around against sides when sides who think they are super fail to break another side. The brazilian 1982 side still throws around this bs because italia knocked them and countless others along with them.

Fact is our greatest success came through catenaccio in the 1960's with mister H's grande inter and this was the modern version of it. People can call it anti football if they want to show their misunderstanding of football. The people who know their football will understand it was brilliant smart tactical football executed to precision. Barca can moan forever facts are they weren't good enough to break us down.
