Polo 1.6 TDI - service plan/motorplan /DIY

Hi guys

I am looking into trading in for a polo 1.6 TDI ( yes i know...its a polo :P )
What i would like to know from other possible Polo owners out there is if they bought the optional service/maintenance plans.

according to the website the service plan is R7.5k for 60,000km. that is roughly R1.9K per service. This will most probably exclude wear and tear items.
Maintenance is even more a joke. R10k for 60,000km or R2.5k per service.

So can anybody make recommendations. I suspect carrying the services on your own cost will work out cheaper, considering that a new polo will still cover some items under warranty.

If someone has pricing for standard services carried out by VW approved service centers, please supply as this will make comparing much easier

In my opinion a service plan is NOT worth it...

If you take the maintenance plan you have to service it at VW and that's just plain expensive - I paid R2500 for an oil change and 2 front brake pads at VW Silver lakes... R680 per hour labour if I remember correctly.

Considering that a service kit (oil+filter) and OEM front brake pads would not have cost me more than R600 I think thats just daylight robbery.
 
Cheaper to do it yourself.

I do my car for R250, and that includes the sparkplugs and oilfilter with new oil, and clean the airfilter as well

dump the service/maintentance idea...

if you are buying new, the 3 year/100k km warranty will fix any and everything wrong with that car....we owned a 1.6 Comfortline Polo from new. The first serivice was R430, then R1100, then R450, then R1200, then R640, Then R920 and again R990 and the 120 000km is coming up soon. So far, the only thing replaced outside of warranty was a new water pump at R2700 (includes labor and genuine VW parts)...

now, our friend, has THE EXACT SAME car (only white in color) and they started off with R3k, R5k services.....weird....

hmmm. Thx for the info.

will hear what the dealer tries to sell me.. then go the opposite :D

One other question. Last one for today i promise.
Current car is roughly 14months old, and i still owe a good amount to the bank. What will be the most cost effective/ less hasslle way to trade in the car?
Selling privately i will probably get more cash, but is it worth the risk and hassles ( remember that i need to somehow get all the cash from the buyer, pay-off my current finance and then obtain other finance for the new car).
Doing all this at the dealer will be probably be a one step process, but they will almost definitely "rape" me on the trade-in value.. :@.

Ideas anyone?

This is exactly the point... Peace of Mind!

the idea behind these things is you include all expenses in the next 3 years or however long you take it out for, in the Purchace Price which comes in handy to those people who buys cars they can't REAAAALLY afford...

I'm not sure about this, maybe someone can correct me, but for VW to honour the Manufacturer's warranty, doesn't the vehicle need to be serviced by VW Dealers?
 
I've had the previous model Polo, 1.9 TDI 74 kW. Did 105,000 km in 2 years I had it without any issues. Every second service is in the region of R1500, and others under R1000. If you're in joburg, I've had the best service from VW in Bryanston (Hatfield VW), and I tried quite a few dealerships all over Gauteng. IMHO its not worth servicing Turbo Diesels privately, these engines are quite complicated and quite a few times even agents don't understand them properly. Also, I've only used 50 ppm diesel, which is quite important for injector life (and economy, performance, etc.)

yup. Need to keep in mind that Diesel motors is a bit more complicated. sigh.
