Pretoria - An ex-boyfriend of 17-year-old Anika Smit, whose hands were severed in a brutal murder at her home in Pretoria, was arrested in connection with the killing on Monday morning.
The 21-year-old man with whom Anika had apparently been in a month-long relationship, will appear in the Magistrate's Court in Pretoria North on Wednesday.
Apparently she ended their relationship just three days before her death.
The man was the last person Anika spoke to on that fateful Wednesday about two months ago.
At some point during that day, she opened the door of her parents' home in Theresa Park, in the north of Pretoria, for someone she seemingly knew. She also put the dogs away so they wouldn't bother her guest.
After that she was murdered and her hands were cut off.
Lungelo Dlamini, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that a 21-year-old man was arrested early on Monday morning at the Carousel casino, north of Pretoria. He did not want to disclose any more information.
Beeld has heard that the 21-year-old was still in bed - apparently alongside one of Anika's female friends - when the police arrived at his flat at the casino.
He is involved with the casino's security services.
Suspect went to funeral
Charlotte Eksteen, 51, Anika's mother, was nearly in tears on Monday morning when Beeld informed her of the arrest.
"I've never met him, but Anika phoned me about two weeks before her death and spoke about him. She said they'd had a huge fight and that she's finished with him.
"She never told me what they had been fighting about," said Eksteen.
"Her father told me he (the suspected killer) was at the funeral. He sat in church crying and shook her father's hand.
"I'm very, very grateful someone's been caught."
Since Anika's death, Eksteen has been on strong medication and has also been admitted to hospital for treatment because she hasn't been able to come to terms with Anika's death.
"My heart was simply too broken."
Arrest won't bring daughter back
Johan Smit, 54, who discovered his daughter's body on the day of the murder, said the suspect had earlier come to visit Anika at his house.
According to him, they were not in a relationship. Smit said the arrest can lead to justice being served, but nothing will bring his daughter back.
He said he can only make peace with Anika's death if the court finds someone guilty by means of concrete evidence.
"All I know is that if he really is the murderer, his life has just come to an end. A guy like that doesn't deserve to live, so he's going to prison forever," said Smit.
Anika's severed hands have not yet been found.
