Any suggestions?

Ps. the reason why I am asking this in a new thread and not just adding to the HTC Desire thread is that

a) it gets lost in there

and

b) it will hopefully create more motivation to give us Desire/Android phone owners our own section.

I know LEAF are currently in talks with nDrive as well, but there's no current solution available. I've got a hybrid solution of Navigon for Android and Navigon maps for iFruit going, but I'd love to go legit... Come to think of it, I think nDrive is in the Market, but it's stupidly expensive for what really isn't fantastic software.

Wisepilot = Garmap, eh? Interesting...

Just registered and downloaded Garmap, it asked me to send an SMS to a number, I couldn't find any mention of cost or subscription so I'm assuming this is just a registration process?

I been doing trials on Nagivon, Copilot and NDrive on my Desire. Navigon is by far the best out of the lot. It feels like it was built for touch screen and I rate it close to Tomtom in terms are routing and re-routing instructions. I would not spend my money on Copilot and Ndrive!

ndrive is the best. only about R200 rand. and you install all maps on card....200 megs or so, install from market and follow instructions but just make sure you download off wifi , 200 megs off 3g data will be expensive

Maybe this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887) will help? Gonna be trying out during the week. More info here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583123).

From the other GPS thread - seems to be working ok for me, although I havent tested it properly yet. Dedicated GPS software will probably be better, but for those of us that dont need turn by turn often enough to justify R800 it will probably do the trick.

I use the hacked Google Maps that enables navigation outside the US
http://uploaded.to/file/6w7e8n/maps4.0.0-brut4-alt.apk (this is the non-root version)

It works fine except that the voice directions are a bit late. Also it uses your 3G to load maps. All in all, pretty good for free

zabatman
28-05-2010, 08:43 PM
I am also using the hacked one called "Maps (brut)". Is there any way around the voice direction delay?

Due to the on-line requirement, I only use it to plan a route and then very close to my destination, or when in a city I am not familiar with.

I really want my TomTom back!. I've kept my TyTN II just for navigation coz I love TomTom.

In Google Maps, push on a street...if you live in a main city, in front of your house while you are at it. But make it a long push. A little sign popup thing comes on...click on it. The last tab is Street view...No off with you, go wow everyone as I have today;-)

Yeah, I certainly wowed them at the local Vodacom shop in my little town. They'd never ever SEEN a Desire :) And certainly not working Google Navigation and Streetview. Not to mention my BLUETIFUL blue TPU resin case :) And the magnetic detector just threw them! And ShapeWriter :) Fun day out.

Does copilot support text to speech on the android (I see its available as an add on for winMo)? As in, will it read out the directions turn by turn?

Does copilot have safety cameras in SA?

Yes it does. Supports both text-to-speech where it reads the street names, and the more traditional recorded voices (like TomTom and Garmins). It is an add-on for the WinMo version because WinMo doesn't have text-to-speech built in.

And, no, not that I know of. It doesn't bother me since I can't speed with my car anyways.

I'd like to see Google Maps have the normal recoded voice as an option without the street names being read out - the text-to-speech voice can be a little nasal. Also reading "John billved" instead of "John Blvd" is a little wrong!

go to http://www.alk.com/copilot/copilot8-store.asp

Purchase CoPilot 8 South Africa

You will need to put in credit card details and purchase online, the site is SSL secure so no need to worry.

approximately 5 - 10 minutes after you purchase is successful you will receive an email from them with your registration details, program key, download link and receipt for purchase. if not, check your spam filter / folder.

follow the link in the email to the download site, you will need to provide the email address you purchased with as well as the postal code from your billing address...

then you will have to download the map file, 180mb, approx 45 minutes depending on internet speed and so on...

then you will need to download the android application, 11,3mb, approx 5 mins depending on internet speed and so on...

then you copy the map folder to your SD card...

then you install the app in the usual way...

and you're done...

Hmmm, would be better if the picture was actually of the car kit...

But as long as whatever car kit you have holds the phone SECURELY and that the charger unit puts out about 800mA - 1000mA you should be able to use it...

My car radio (Pioneer P710BT (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Support/CarAudioVideo/In-Dash/CD-Players/ci.DEH-P710BT.Support)) has all the phone functions built into it so at the moment I am only looking for a decent car charger that puts out the required amperage...

Hi guys

I have Copilot Live 8 installed on my Desire, but everytime I start it, it displays the following message "POI set standard - Version does not match network version.", does anyone know what the problem could be? I can navigate fine to any street destination, but obviously I don't have any POI's as they didn't load correctly?

If I look at the "About Copilot" info, I've got 8.2.0.218. POI Data = POI_NT.AF-SouthAfrica-194.2009.04.1.2 if that helps.

Forgot to mention, running stock OTA Froyo aswell.

Just ignore the error poi set does not match... It does not mean a thing, tons of info online. Copilot works on froyo but you need version 8.2

@mayurh : Yip, backed up the map, uninstalled, deleted everything from sd card, re-installed, same prob. :-)

@tim182 : It actually does mean alot because I can't search for nearets restaurants etc... The POI's are not listed at all because of this error.

Strange, I get the same error every time I start and I have all POI's, including custom speed cams. Even the official Copilot site says you can safely ignore the error. I have a feeling it could much rather be your POI set which is corrupt. Try uninstall, delete copilot folder on sd, reinstall, put poi file into the copilot/save folder and let it update automatically.

Thanks Tim182, I've just bought a new memory card, will load co-pilot on that one tonight and see what happens.

Can I recommend that everyone uses Waze. The more people that use it the better the traffic report will be.

The best thing is that it is free!
Unfortunately doing a bit of browsing on it there are not many roads that it has :(
However it offers a feature to record your own roads and you get points for adding stuff to the map, so, if we can put in the info then we can get our traffic info for free!

I haven't used Copilot, but I extensively tried out Nokia Maps, Garmin and Ndrive on my previous Nokia phone. None are perfect but for hassle-free ease of use, I settled on Ndrive. I've now got it on my Desire for just R600 and it works faultlessly. I'm a happy camper.

I've got 10.1.15 and the lock is quick - about ten seconds. Have you got assisted GPS on? That uses cell phone towers to get a basic triangulation fix, whihc makes things quicker.

NDrive gives you a one week trial, so it's worth a try at least.

Try Navitel, app is "free" google is your friend. I took Tracks 4 Africa and converted them to Navitel .nm2 file format and loaded on the SD card. Best GPS SW I have found. Use Mapedit app to convert map formats.

Waze is working quite weill now in the JHB an CT area. It is a 100% turn by turn GPS navigation program that will navigate you around traffic captured by other users on Waze.
You can go to www.waze.com and update the map yourself if your street happens to not be there or is simply not named.
Right now there is very good traffic reports from a number of users who use waze on a daily basis.
