Pakistan is blocking access to Facebook in response to an online group calling on people to draw the Prophet Mohammed, officials said Wednesday.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority issued the order a day before "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day," scheduled by a Facebook group with the same name.

"Obviously it (the blocking of Facebook) is related to the objectionable material that was placed on Facebook. That is why it is blocked," said Khoram Ali Mehran of the telecommunication authority.

"We have blocked it for an indefinite amount of time. We are just following the government's instructions and the ruling of the Lahore High Court. If the government decides to unblock it then that's what we will do," he told CNN by phone.

The organization has not received any complaints from internet users about the Facebook group so far, he said. Devout Muslims consider it offensive to depict Mohammed.

There were riots around the world in response to a series of cartoons of Mohammed in a Danish newspaper in 2005, and at least two European cartoonists live under police protection after publication of their drawings of the Muslim prophet.

Ye, the Muslims are crazy that way. Reminds me of that recent South Park Episode where the only thing they did to "tune" Mohammed was put him in a bear suit. The same episode South Park insinuated that Jesus watched porn, Buddha snorted coke and it was the Muslims who had a problem with that episode. They went so overboard, im surprised Comedy Central wasn't bombed. Religion just brings out the crazy in people.

If I drew a pile of dust would that not be the accurate picture?

Or, and here I really don't know about Islam, is not the spirit of Mohammed in everything? So no matter what I draw it'll be accurate?

A Seattle cartoonist's satirical suggestion that Thursday be dubbed "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" has led to anything but humor in some quarters, particularly Pakistan, which on Wednesday evening shut down Facebook.
An Islamic lawyers association in Lahore, Pakistan, argued that the contest essentially equaled blasphemy, and on Wednesday won a court injunction against the social-networking site. A Facebook page promoting the cartoonist's idea (but not set up by her) had drawn upward of 71,000 members as of 11 p.m. PDT Wednesday

The brouhaha started when Molly Norris drew a cartoon depicting objects like a domino, a spool of thread, and a handbag, saying they were the "real likeness of Mohammed."
Norris said she drew her cartoon as a statement on free speech and a gesture of support for Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of the Comedy Central show "South Park." The pair drew threats of retaliation after airing an episode earlier this year depicting the prophet Muhammed in a bear suit. Some Muslims consider images of Mohammed to be blasphemous.
The episode led a New York-based Web site called RevolutionMuslim.com to warn creators of the animated series that "what they are doing is stupid, and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh." Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker and relative of famed painter Vincent Van Gogh, was murdered in 2004 after producing a 10-minute movie focused on violence against women in some Islamic societies.
The show's producers then said Comedy Central, to make the episode suitable for later airing, censored the show by removing a speech about intimidation and fear without their permission.
After posting her Muhammed-related cartoon--which included a fake group called Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor calling for an "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day"--the idea quickly went viral, drawing thousands of enthusiastic supporters and spawning not only a Facebook page, but a blog.
The idea has also drawn a good share of opponents, however, including some pro-free-speech political cartoonists--on Facebook and elsewhere online.

This is wrong. If the same was done by Muslims, concerning Jesus, the Christians would be offended.

This is like taunting a rabid dog. This is provocation of the extremists, which even a non Muslim can see.

Europeans are concerned with the singing of genocide songs, but then we do things like this.

Let's not stir up even more hatred in this world.
