The department of water affairs has laid criminal charges against the mine managed by relatives of former president Nelson Mandela and President Jacob Zuma for pumping mine water into a protected wetland.

"They are pumping out 180 megalitres through their reactor per day without treating it and this gets dumped into the river," charged the department's water quality director Marius Keet.

The water in the internationally protected Blesbokspruit had low pH levels, which meant it was acidic, and contained high levels of iron and suspended particles, he said.

I'm glad the Dept of Water Affairs is taking action. I hope this extends and sends a message to all other mining companies. Mine closure in SA is going to hit us hard in terms of water management.

Actually not.

You'll find that it's all about the $. Often the fines issued to them by environmental bodies are less than the costs of actually disposing of it properly. So it's cheaper and less hassle to just dump it and keep paying fines.
 
There is a possibility that the media is sensationalising this.

I would imagine the Zuma and Mandela family members who are involved in this mine, are not involved at operational level. It would not be fair to blame it on them. Management of the mine defnitely has to answer for this , though.

Incorrect.... I know the people who manage the mines environmental issues (in Springs near Marievale sanctuary) The post was eventually made 'toothless' when the company was sold to a BEE consortium about 6yrs ago. The environmental officer has since then retired and no-one has replaced the post.. and since then, Marievale is toxic.
 
The question that should be asked is what took them so long to press charges, this story broke ages ago.

Nope. The big-shots pressure mine management for more money, increased profits, etc. Management saves where it can, corners get cut – mine safety, environment, water, etc. Then the unions trumpet about ‘mine safety' or there’s a media expose’ or something. Management is the scapegoat (always).

If you cannot convince shareholders to abide by the law, you do not belong in management.
 
This is also the mine where workers haven't been paid in months, and which has some notable discrepancies between previous (prior to being saved by black empowerment) production numbers and current production numbers... gold produced by the mine mysteriously disappears along the way to being sold.

"It is only because we are a young black company that we are being prosecuted," he said.

Who are the shareholders? What law? Do you think management ‘advice’ trumps bling? Management never had any problem before.
