Zapiro cartoon sparks religious row

Cartoonist Zapiro has been drawn into the furore around the depiction of the prophet Muhammad after Muslim groups tried to stop the publication of his cartoon.

The Jamiatul Ulama - Gauteng, an islamic theological body, on Thursday tried to prevent the Mail and Guardian from publishing the cartoon by filing an urgent application to the Johannesburg High Court.

The cartoon depicts the prophet lying down on a therapist's chair saying: "Other prophets have followers with a sense of humour!" Beside him is a newspaper with a headline reading: "Everybody draw Muhammad day". Behind him, a bespectacled therapist wearing a suit and bowtie is seen taking notes.

Jamiatul Ulama - Gauteng claim that the cartoon was offensive and could cause some violence, particularly in South Africa just before the World Cup.

The order, however, was not granted. The Jamiatul Ulama - Gauteng took the application to court on the same day that Pakistan's government ordered internet service providers to block Facebook amid anger over a page that encouraged users to post images of Prophet Muhammad.

This is pretty stupid before the world cup.

Geez do we want to invite an attack before the world cup for a cartoon? Wait for the world cup to go FFS :D.
 
I know there is press freedom and all that, but surely Zapiro knew of the shyte storm it would create? If not him the Editor?

The article clearly says that it was because of the draw the prophet day... so the timing was related to the event.

Besides... the only ones who are gonna get all het up are the crazies. Let them.

It's about time they learned they are part of a global community and nothing is sacred.
 
They have to learn that modern Western basic human rights will not be given up for a barbaric bronze age belief system. I dont mind (too much) if they act like animals in their own countries, but they are not going to infect our society with their hangups. Not after western society spent thousands of years fighting off the choke of religious oppression.

Why should a few extremists control freedom of speech? There's no hate speech in that comic so there'd be no problem with it in a country with freedom of the press.

I'd just like to know which 'western society' you refer to, certainly not SA, the UK, or the USA, were the common law is still based on the law of Canon (sp?)?
 
I say this very tongue in cheek, but surely Allah "the all wise and powerful" is not so weak and insecure as to be offended by an ink drawing on some paper? Seriously? Is that what you people [the Muslims] think of him? Can't he act for himself. Does he need some flawed, puny humans to carry out his act of divine justice?

Christians had to get used to all kind of "blasphemy" a long time ago. It got to the point where we realized that those making such drawings were just trying to push our buttons and mature up up a bit.

The god you worship, and the prophet you follow is not necessarily the same person being depicted in the cartoon... unless in your mind you make him so. You become what they want you to become when you allow them to push your buttons and be controlled.

Just go about your business and ignore it. If you cannot then at least acknowledge that the measure of your religion has just been defined by a cartoon.

I dunno.. I thought it sounded a bit like a crazy raving... then I saw the guys alias.. and I thought "You know what... Im just ganna ignore this.. I dont have the energy".

I may have the spelling wrong, but the law of Canon stems from the Old Testement of the Bible. The basics of how a contract work,that it can be concluded by agreement all stem from it. Common law items such as murder, rape and theft being illegal all stem from there too. I'm trying to point out that 'western society' is not as secular was you may want to believe.

I think Zapiro was right: His depictions says that Mohammed's followers dont have a sense of humour.....
Clearly they don't.

Curious question: I know with chritianity there are picture depictions of jesus in childrens books. Are there any like that for the muslims?
