Would you buy this 6800 Ultra from these guys?

Do you really need to spend that much on a card with a limited lifespan ?

AGP is on it's way out - not through the choice of the buyer as much as the manufacturers - I suppose it depends if you feel your gaming rig will last another 2 years or more ?

I'd go for a 6600 GT for half the price - easily enough power to run the current crop of games + any other games for the next 2 years plus smoothly.

Ye rather hang on to your current card. Wait till prices drop. That 9800 should still be able to play most.

computersonly is supposed to be reliable. They are advertised in the PCFormat all the time.

@ Mad, that card you posted is just the plain 6800, not 6800Ultra :) . I'm selling my AGP 6800GT at a very good price. Card is in box with a sealed original copy of Doom III. PM me if your interested Andre.

From what I read there are a number of new cards due within the next few months that will be better than the current top cards (as if that's never the case). I'll be retiring my current system at some stage in the future and will get PCI Express then.

For now the 9800XT doesn't really cut it anymore with the latest games and I'd like something faster but spending a ton of money on a new motherboard, CPU, power supply and 2 Gigs of RAM isn't on the cards. :)

@ Mad and bb-matt I'm thinking of keeping my current rig for another six months or so. Looking at the benchies a 6800GT or Ultra gets much better FPS at 1280x1024 resolution with AA and aniso than my current card.

@Ratwiz, PM sent.

FWIW, been buying at computersonly for a number of years now. I have no probs referring them to anybody. Only complaint, if one can call it that, is that what you see on the website is not their full "arsenal". I tend to get ideas from there and then rather speak to them in person or mail them

If you going to buy a AGP graphics card, Don't spend a fortune on it. The best card 2 buy is a 6600GT. Both price and performance make it the most worth while card to get!

The x800's are also pretty decent....

I usually buy from Take2 but I'm getting a little annoyed with how quick they are to charge your credit card but make you wait for the goods. They used to be better with that.

That 6800U at Computersonly is about the same price as a 6800GT from Take2.

Dont bother buying the GF6800 anymore... The 7800GTX is OUT!!! Its the equivilent of the 'Ultra" versions, but is the newer generation. It runs faster, cooler and uses less power... Rather try and get ur hands on one of these babies if you are about to upgrade... Check www.tomshardware.com for a review somewhere... And yes the manufactures have already started making, so they should be out on shelves within the next few weeks...

its weird at how the original poster commented that he doesnt want to get anything PCI-E as YET... and all the suggestions are about PCI-E... lol!

as for AGP on the way out... wasnt PCI supposed to be outphased too? :P

if you have a decent system get an AGP card coz there isnt much of a difference between the current PCI-E and AGP performers at the moment ( please exclude the 7800 as its not out in SA yet and you need a bank loan to buy it too ).

with the release of the 7800 the 6800 units should drop in price and thats where you will get the best bang for the buck... :)

useless, most of the cards suggested are available in AGP, so I'm not sure where you get your "all suggestions are about PCI-E" from :)

not enough morning coffee? So sorry MR ADSL MASTER... :p

The 7800 is PCI E for now only. Seeing that I want to end up with 2 systems at the end of the day I might as well get a really good AGP card until I get a new sytem later on.

Problem is that it's going to be PCI-E only....

Andre: Yip, Computersonly is a reputable company although you should try and look for a Geforce 6800GT and over-clock it to Ultra speeds. The Gainward 6800GT Golden Sample would have been the perfect card (comes pre over-clocked) but they don';t distribute to SA anymore. :(

I think the GeForce mx's (Geforce2 very old tech, DirectX 7) still support PCI, but 6800's don't (DirectX 9). So concider it phased out.

I'm looking for an upgrade from my ATI 9800 but not willing to spend a small fortune to go PCI Express (yet).
TIA

I buy pretty much ALL my PC stuff and upgrades from computersonly. They are a reputable, reliable company staffed by a great bunch of guys. And they offer very good prices.

In terms of the card: I would not go from a Radeon 9800 to a GF6800. Rather spend a bit more and get that new GF7800 (or 7600 whatever it is called). That will offer a big performance leap. Or get the GF6600 if you are on a budget, it will give you some extra FPS.
