300Mb 3G data, Lenovo Y550 laptop & Vodafone 3G HSPDA modem bundle

Hey Everyone,

Is it worth it going for a deal like this from vodacom?

300Mb 3G data, Lenovo Y550 laptop & Vodafone 3G HSPDA modem bundle @ R409 x 36 months

You pay R200 pm for laptop and R159 for data & modem. I think the data is a bit expensive cos you can get the 1.2gig bundle and same modem for R349 pm.

Anyone bought one of these bundles before?

R7, 200 for laptop, not bad, retails for around R8k

I am just really wary of signing data contacts. 36 months is a long time hey. In my personal opinion, buy the laptop and modem cash and use pre-paid data. Much more power if you want to change service providers. But ja, R8k is a lot to fork out. I know you can get laptops with built in HSDPA for around R8k, there is an HP I think.

Overall it looks like an okay deal, but data contracts... :-/ I will never sign one.

I personally don't like these notebook bundles with 3G modem. First you're stuck in a 3 year contract. Who takes care of the notebook if it become faulty. You're basically sent running around from place to place trying to get this notebook fixed.

I think if you seriously need the notebook because you cannot afford to fork out R8k for a notebook one time, then get it for the notebook. But if you're thinking it's just a good "deal", then that's another think, because 300MB data...what a joke.

What's even worse is these notebooks with built in 3G modem. These should only be sold to people who are fully coverage by 3G, as if there is no 3G coverage, you're screwed. No way of installing a 3G external yagi antenna.

I agree with Shred about going pre-paid. At least you can choose your service provider if one connection is worse than the other.
