Schoolgirls who don't fall pregnant will be rewarded - if a plan by the Western Cape government goes ahead.

The proposed policy is a desperate bid to reduce high teenage pregnancy rates and ease the cost burden on the provincial Department of Social Welfare.

Social Development MEC Dr Ivan Meyer announced the initiative during a media briefing on Tuesday but could not outline the reward policy because the plan was still being researched - including how to reward boys who did not become fathers while still at school.

But, said Meyer's spokesman, Danny Abrahams, pupils would "definitely not" be rewarded with money.

Is this the worst idea the DA have ever had ?

Let me guess - this will not apply to all schools ....
 
They're already rewarded with a life, further education reduced chances of HIV/STD's etc etc etc
Not looking after a baby during matric exams etc etc
 
Will the same count for guys who don't knock girls up?

Until you take into account that alot of young girls are getting pregnant to get a child grant so they can have money for cellphones etc then it kind of does make sense. There was a TV documentary a while back in KZN about girls wanting the grant so they can have a bit of money.
 
I dont think it is such a bad idea. First of all, they should do it for only certain schools. Else it could be very costly and rich girls dont need more money.

This would benefit all everyone. The DA as they would overall end up paying less as fewer people would fall pregnant which means less welfare. The girls as they would be less inclined to fall pregnant and thus improving their lives (a baby is a huge burden). Lastly the ones that are good and wouldn't have gotten themselves pregnant also benefit as they get some financial reward.
 
Good idea I think. Help em bitches keep their legs closed, or at least encourage them to wear protection. It's like the UK paying kids to go to school...
 
This is preposterous. How can the DA even entertain something this mentally deficient.

You're never going to eliminate teen pregnancy entirely (Teenagers are going to have sex no matter what you say or do.) but the best way to try is through sex education and the availability of contraceptives.

Oh, and I agree that child grants should not be available to under 18's.

Paying maintenance must be enforced and fathers should even be traced by DNA as per a National Register.

Men can go to jail if they don't pay maintenance to the mother.

Boys must have the maintenance costs accumulate, with interest, if they cannot pay immediately, until they are 18, then face the the costs or jail.

Girls must have the costs of a large fine accumulate, with interest, if they cannot pay immediately, until they are 18, then face the the costs or jail.
 
Wtf? Next we gonna rewards criminals for not committing crime, kids for not being naughty.

Why? They could make it, only goverment schools for instance, or schools that fees are less that a certain amount. You only want to do this in areas that have these pregnancy problems, which are poor areas.

BrendanD, I think you have mistaken the poorly educated South Africans with informed First World kids. Most won't understand that a child would hinder their education and thus their life. To them, unprotected sex means more pleasure and if they get impregnated they get free money from the government. So when they weigh it up in their minds, it would be either start using a condom which part of african culture is against it (see source). Or have unprotected sex, which may lead to a baby which would probably mean they drop out of school. But that means they get money from the government and plus the pass rate for poor schools is very low, so they probably dont think they have a real chance at passing anyways.

The DA's plan, they see that they can get free money without even having the burden of a baby.

So you want to discriminate?

The problem is also cultural, sex education simply does not exists in african culture, it's not something that is talked about. What needs to get gone is education and hopefully we can erase some of the 'culture'.

What? I think education is pretty vital. Honestly, the point I was making wasn't how they are going to implement it as honestly I dont acer if they do it for every school or just one. My point was that I don't think sex education will work and that this might actually see a decrease in pregnancies as free money is the language of the poor man.
 
Crazy as the idea sounds on the surface, I like it. One of the biggest problems facing the poor's challenge to rise from poverty and obtain a better life for themselves - give themselves a chance of studying etc. - is underage/teen/young pregnancies. We can debate it as much as we want to, the reasons are a combination of poverty and education and it is a reality.

And what the fiscus stems to lose from the incentives will more than be made up by decreased pressure on social security.

Best idea ever actually. The idea of rewarding single mothers with privelege is bull ! Despite what Oprah teaches us there is nothing heroic about getting pregnant while not married. The last thing we need to be doing is giving money to girls who can't keep their legs shut or bother to use protection. Reward those who act responsible and wait until they are financially capable to consider children.
 
Being rewarded for doing the right thing is the thin end of the wedge.

Next what - rewarding scholars who get through the year without stabbing their classmate ?

But I agree single mothers at school should not be rewarded either.
