Hi
Just thought I would let y'all know - I just tried to get an axxess 30GB ADSL account today and couldn'g get it. Turns out they dont accept credit cards - not even of the limitless corporate variety. They do debit orders and cash deposits - neither of which can be accomodated by corporates...

*sigh*

Yeah - they dont have the facilities - the charges are never attractive to small businesses. They’d have to recoup the cost somewhere.

ScrnScrm, we are in the process of making it available. It should be available by the end of this month. I have just spoken to our bank and they are trying to get it sorted out asap.

Cool - let me know too so I can switch over. Makes it easier when it comes to reimbursement.

Do you have a referral programme? ;)

Cool. Thanks for the feedback. Please can you post when it happens. I think it blows that you guys are turning down large corporate business... ;)

Why would any corporation not be able to pay by d/o or bank transfer?

How much do the companies pay for creditcard transactions?

A rate negotiated with the bank, usually between 2.5 and 5%.

Debit Cards could be lower at perhaps 2%.
I would be interested to know what a Company like Pick n Pay gets charged.

The thing to note is that you can pay direct with a Credit Card.
Well I can with my Master Card using Internet Banking.
It's just that you have to push the money to them and not the other way around.
Correct me if I am wrong here.

In South Africa it is against the law to charge a customer for the use of a Credit Card, whereas in the East and other places, some shops, like the Camera Shop I was at in Singapore wanted to levy me 3% for using a Credit Card.

It has a lot to do with your margins and in the case of Axxess, I don’t think it is much.

In a nutshell - corruption. We only have two methods of payment. EFT out of SAP R/3, or via Credit Card. For EFT payment, we require that the supplier be registered in the SAP system as a vendor (in itself a long and lengthy process as the supplier has to prove credentials independantly to make sure that they are not fly by nighters or family of staff members), have to invoice on a monthly basis, may not contractually bind us to a term of service, and they have to negotiate a period of payment (normally 30 days from invoice). The other option would be to charge it to a corporate expense card (typically diners or amex) and attach the invoice to the expense claim. This is the route I typically take as a. its much easier, b. I control my own budget and c. i dont carry the debt burden after I have supplied the invoice. The negative of the credit card route is that i would have to assign each charge to a cost center, and am accountable for all expenditure on it, but provided its in budget and due prudence is used, its normally not a problem at all.

Expense cards are the route most large corporates are taking nowadays, particularly with sundry expenses such as travel, communication expenses etc etc.

I know it sounds a bit unreasonable, but hey, thats just the way it is :)

Thanks for explaining it to me. Makes perfect sense now.

No problems so far ... should not be hassles as they are just a VISP for SAIX.

Had hassle initially with my login to their authentication server (was my fault) but one call sorted it out and the person on the other side was not an orc but actually knew the problem and how to solve it.

Also like their client webpages where you can request additional services from them or even change your payment settings or check your billing without faxing or calling them.

Must admit that axxess is amazing good customer service and reliability side. Having only used my ADSL and their service a week, a referred my boss to them about a week before I signed up, his greek and extremely pedantic and a computer newbie. They sorted out his connection, his preferred payment and had his account up in minutes. I asked the receptionist to fax the application to them. 10 minutes later when she returned the fax I had already recieved the confirmation of my created account. I had no hassle setting up my router to connect, once the password was in it connected first time and I have only had the normal disconnects for change of ip, generally only 2-3 seconds after being disconnected.

Great service, great connectivity, good prices. Been wondering about the good news they promise for the 1st of August though

You've actually touched on a favourite gripe of mine - over the years, I've had some pretty vicious arguments with many bean-counters in many corporates over payment mechanisms, which are mostly highly inflexible ostensibly on the grounds of 'financial control measures' or 'auditability' or 'transaction traceability', or some such similar nonsense. If anything, one would expect a smaller organisation to have inflexible and highly limited payment mechanisms, not the other way around. For heaven's sake, a large corporate has the means and wherewithal to implement suitable alternatives as necessary, whereas the smaller organisation can't easily do this! Hell, the monthly Axxess payment is very likely only a fraction of the petty-cash float held by some corporate receptionists! I've come to the conclusion that much of it has to do with issues of corporate hierarchy/power/empire-building, rather than effective financial control policy or procedures. I still consider the description 'corporate cretins' highly appropriate given the prevalence of this kind of nonsense, notwithstanding technological advances...

Has anybody noticed that www.webafrica.co.za accounts can have 4 concurrent connections? This has just been added.

This is a major advantage, we can now use the same higher GB account at more that one location, home and office etc.

Think I am going to sign up with them soon. Anybody have any problems webafrica?
