how much will I have to pay at customs for an ipad?

My mom is going to Australia and I am thinking about giving her some cash to get me 1 or 2 ipads,When they get back to SA what kind of import taxes are going to be slapped on them when getting off the plane and going through customs?

Is it only the 14% or is it that as well as a additional amount because it is electronics?

I am wanting to get 2 one for me and one to sell to elevate the cost for my ipad,How much is a good price? I was thinking R6200 seems fare for a 16GB,which is much lower than any body else online,what do you think?

Any ways any help and info on custom duties will be greatly appreciated and hopefully I will have an ipad by the end of june :)
 
Wrong.

Customs on electronics entering SA is 30% of the items Value.

Sooo using the current AU exchange rate to the rand----$629 AUD = R4276 (Call it R4300)

Now for the SA government to start raping you :) When you declare it they will charge you 30% of the items value.... Which of R4300 is R1300. So you going to end up paying R5600 for one iPad. And you want to sell it for R6200? R800 profit for all that effort... dont think its really worth it. Sure if you want one for yourself then go for it. Remember that 2 iPads is also going to put about 3KG onto your luggage... dont wanna be overweight at check in:) If you really want to get two, sell it atleast for R6500, someone will take it.
 
When we import from the UK (online store group order), we work on 15.7% for VAT (for some odd reason its not 14%) and then 30% when in doubt for duties. Also my mom was suprised that they checked her luggage at customs last year. She liv e in OZ but comes to SA once a year and for the first time they have been checking her bags.

Best advice would be to speak to customs at the airport on what is the correct procedure. There is a difference between ordering from an online store and bringing in at the airport.

South Africa is the only country in the world which searches people not for contraband but to tax them on everything possible. SARS are thieving, greedy slimeballs. You don't see customs at Heathrow, Dubai, Singapore, Osaka, Berlin, etc do that.

so you have to pay 30% of the value of something you already bought to the government in SA when you arrive :wtf: daylight robbery is what that is.

its actually 30% plus 14% tax making it 45%

O ye and actually the 14% tax is calculated on 110% of the cost so if the item is a R100 you wont only pay R14 tax but a little more in fact.

Its complete bull poo!

Yes, diplomatic post. In my uni days I was friends with the son of a diplomat. He'd bring anything in and show the customs the middle finger (literally).

Its a tough one.

Cant you just say,"I bought this in south Africa and toke it out of the country with me"?!?! Imagine paying 45% tax on a ipod every time you left SA with it...and how can they prove you didn't?

When you leave South Africa, you are supposed to declare any valuebles - a form is filled out showing serial numbers of such equipment like camera's, laptop's, ipod's etc. So when you return to South Africa, you can prove that you left with those items, and are returning with them.

As far as bringing new stuff in - just go through the green ch - nothing to declare, they might do a random search of passengers, but nowadays it's not nearly as bad as it was pre 1994. In the apartheid days they would pull every second passenger over and search them. I travel overseas twice a year every year, and have never been searched. If, by some remote chance you are pulled over and searched....you can always play dumb and say you never knew that it had to be declared, and then you will just pay the normal taxes, that you would have paid if you had declared it.

If they find it she can say it's her own device she uses for work/comm's etc. It helps if she has photos and stuff on it. The worst that can happen is that they will bill her customs duties and tax. They won't arrest or fine her unless she's got a container load of them for resale.

Pre-1994 they prolly searched for contraband. Now they search for stuff to tax you. They pull every second person over. SA customs are the worst in the world. Seriously.
