help to convince mom NOT to sign 2yr contract

my mother signed up for dsl 384 a few days ago. that is cool and all, but then she told me about the "free" modem they're offering her if she signs up for TWO YEARS and gets LOCKED IN, as well as all that other marketing **** they use to lure in ignorant customers.

anyway, i've argued with her endlessly about it to a point she started hitting me. how the hell can i convince her not to get the contract, and instead buy an adsl modem which is cheap, then pay monthly subscription for adsl so we can change from telkom when cheaper competition comes out?

please supply me with some convincing hard evidence why she must not do this. it's not as simple as saying "nothing is for free", etc.

I rather not say anything just in case your mom starts hitting me as well :).
 
Tell your mom what the actual price of the modem is, that TelkoDemonopoly want her to waste 2 years of her life with, and what markup TelkoDemonopoly have added onto that price, and then tell her about the ADSL modem you want to get, and how it is going to suite your needs better...chances are it won't change her mind - the older generation still seem to think that TelkoDemonopoly cares about its customers...:rolleyes:
 
1. prices are dropping and she won;t get it cheaper because she is on contract ???? (is that true)

2. SNO coming by the end of the year - again miss out on cheaper prices

3. Its TELKOM !!!!!!!!!!
 
Just make her read this forum here and she will understand if she is not completely stubborn. But moms have these tendencies sometimes...:D
 
Hmm, if she reads some of the stuff posted here, it's likely she'll decide against getting DSL384 completely ! :D
 
How do these contracts actually work ? Do you sign a form with a couple of pages containing the contract or do you just sign the sign off form the techie has and that's the contract ?

I was just thinking..... they're saying people could be making calls over the SNO by Christmas, but in an article serveral months back, it said that the majority of the SNO's customeres would have to use Telkoms infrastructure for some time until the SNO is fully setup, so that would include ADSL infrastructure. So was whoever made that statement originally incorrect or is it partly correct?

It does actually, albeit a very confusing one.

If your mom is as stubborn as mine then you have no hope, just get the crap modem. It does the job but its clunky user interface is painful to navigate if you want to configure anything.

I think this will just induce another beating, the poor guy can only take so much :D
 
Or you can just mention the apalling quality of the telkom modems. Of the guys who post here who have to reset those Marconi jobs every couple of days, vs. guys who forget where exactly in the building the adsl line is situated because the Netgear modem has been doing it's thing for the last 18 months, despite multiple lightning strikes and power surges.

Says something about quality, doesn't it?

If it's not already too late, the way to convince her is to undermine the factors that are causing her to opt for the Telkrap deal. This may have something to do with affordability - she may not have the ready cash to purchase a non-Telkrap device, even if a cheapish one. In that case, tell her you'll pay for it - that'll convince her that you're quite serious about the issue. If affordability is not an issue, try and find out why she believes it's a good deal, and post back on this thread...

Good to hear. With the price war going on between resellers at the moment, that decision becomes even wiser...
 
D-Link do generally make good products. Good Choice

I see the 4 Port Router has just dropped in price to 590 Exc VAT and the wireless router (also with 4 ethernet ports though) is going @ 1060 exc VAT
