1024K ADSL gonna be worth it or not?

PS. I know 384 and 512 are almost the same so 384 would be the better option because it is cheaper.

It would help if Telkom were actually clever enough to differentiate between the two products properly. So many people with DSL384 report DSL512 speeds. They sure make sure you pay the extra difference in price though.

1024 above 384 or 512
1024 should be double the speed of 512?
So a large file that took an hour to download on 512, might take now 30min on 1024? :)

Not that I am aware of.

Although I spotted a post tonight where someone was saying that Telkom has upgraded his exchange to a over 4MB. He can see the stats on the WAN.
This he was saying was for the proposed Video/Movies over IP that they want to implement. I think August will herald a changed world in the way of service offerings over Broadband.
browsing should be about the same right
It should be faster. :)

But I read the forums of MyADSL everyday to keep one step ahead.

Things are happening.
 
Well 1MB wouldn't really make your browsing faster..their is a limit how fast a website can load you know ;)

It would be perfect for say d/l a file and watching a video at the same time for instance....

But if you're like me and abuse Firefox's tabbed browsing feature, I often have more than 8 tabs open, it will help alot :p
 
For me the problem is the fact that a chain is only as strong as its link.

I only hope that Telkom do not pick up problems on their Network with their BackBone becoming a bottleneck.

Increasing Last Mile link speeds to all these anticipated new ADSL users, may have the effect of showing up small pipes into some towns. However, I hear that every Exchange is connected via an ATM link with a Minimum 2GB Bandwidth, or is this just marketing hype.

Every Tom, D-I-C-K or Themba watching Video on Demand is going to require serious bandwidth

I don't know about their backbone, but they've got huge cahones to charge what they do and then tell us it's "best practice" or "competitive"

Video on Demand - I wouldn't worry about that right now, it's just a trial. Heck, they haven't got it right in countries with ample bandwidth, so I dought it's going to be "rolled out" here anytime soon.

With a 1mb line, you will start to see limitations in some of servers your downloading from. p2p will improve dramatically, assuming it isn't shaped into the ground.

Streaming audio and video - depends on the stream. 320x240 at high quality without any pauses will be easy. With a perfect 384 connection, you can stream 320x240 - try the broadband video link here :- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/default.stm

My 384 will play 10 seconds then buffer.

Good question.
I'd hazard an educated guess here, and say that with the amount of business Huawei is getting from Telkom, I'd say it is in good condition.
I don't know whether Huawei is actually supplying transmission equipment to Telkom, but I do know they are supplying DSLAMS.
Huawei is a bit of a hated player in the Telco vendor industry as they are selling stuff hand over fist at prices no-one can compete with.
While they have terrible implementation, they are capable of absolutely huge speeds with their equipment. I believe they still have the longest ultra high speed back bone from a Moscow site to China.
If Telkom is making use of Huawei's cheaper than chips equipment, I believe we are going to see some interesting leaps. The problem is the cost of backhauling the traffic out of SA, rather than the capability of the equipment.
 
As far as I've heard Hauwei is actually using Cisco's IOS. They got sued for this because one of the routers actually displayed the IOS banner somewhere, and were forced to remove that (the banner).

I have yet to research this for accuracy, but I've heard this from multiple sources.

Their VRP (their IOS) is not a copy of IOS but merely contained one module from IOS.

"The quality isn’t the best, but it’s good, it works, and that’s good enough for countries that don’t have a lot of money.”

Kind of like buying a TATA car ... it ain't no Merc A class but it takes me from A to B and it is dirt cheap.
 
Okay, from speaking to my brother in the UK has has used both the 512kb and 1mbit connections, he says that for surfing, email, skype, etc, he noticed no difference at all.

He only notices the difference when he downloads a file
 
Performance is a complicated subject.

Line speed is but one factor in the process of rendering a web page for instance. The speed of the server and client, the number of concurrent requests the server is trying to service whilst servicing your request, the speed of your client machine also has a role to play.
In a nut shell it all depends were your bottleneck is as to whether you see a performance improvement. Upgrading your graphics card for example may just have the same result as upgrading your line!
It's very difficult/neh impossible to generalise due to the huge number of variables concerned (and I haven't mentioned anywhere near all of them here).

Suffice to say when I still lived in the UK 3 Years ago , I upgraded from a 512 to 1MB cable line and I noticed a huge improvement in all network services. This may not be true in your environment.

At the end of the day it boils down to what is important to you, a faster car might just get you to the next robot quicker, but not speed up your journey, but the thrill of that alone might be all the justification you need ;)

It is entirely dependant on what you are talking about. Whether it is quality of product or quality of the whole package.
My experience with them, is that their "Swarm" approach to integration is the largest point of failure.
They will send 50 people to do a job in two months, that I would do in a month on my own. I've seen them make costly errors on client sites (Manipulation of address translation on MSCs) without proper documented work flows and the like.
Perhaps this has improved, and then again perhaps not. I do know they are desperately trying to steal my engineers and this is a definite sign that they are aware of that point of failure.

As regards their switching equipment, it is pretty much as good as motorola, nortel, nokia or ericsson, not quite as logical, as their signalling libraries are not ulticom omni based but pretty robust. One needs to look at their rampant growth versus general catastrophic network failures in their clients.
I know of none.
As regards their data equipment, I believe that is pretty damned good.

I like the story about receiving disks.
The tactic is, whenever a chinese firm gets some kit, they swarm and reverse engineer it the day a vendor leaves site.

I had a very senior person at Huawei tell me they have a huge list of equipment and software they cannot sell outside china simply because it is largely reverse engineered code.
