Who has opinions on the Springbok side taking on Wales

Hi all

I would like to get some response on the team P-Divvy chose to tour the Welsh.
My personal opinion is that he is doing exactly the same as what the Bulls did against the Stormers (not final) in that he is resting his key side and playing a "B" side Springboks.

C'mon, these guys are Rugby players in profession why do they need rest? It is their job!

Furthermore it is an insult to South Africans if you dont send your Best to play another country.

Maybe I am wrong

Wales is not a walk over team. I also would not look at them as a B-Side. We have never really had depth in our bench (a few years ago) but lately our bench players have some great skill & they need game time to improve even more.

We will beat them I know that.

Bare in mind you need to keep developing and finding talent, this does not happen by always playing your best team.
 
I agree that no team is a walkover but, if you send you national team you should send your BEST team. after all our nations pride is on the shoulders of those 15 men in the green jerseys

I agree with developing talent, but i dont think a test match is the right way to do it. We have so many good competitions to get players used to the big game mentality. If they do good in schools they will probably go on and play either Varsity Cup (fort the students) and/or vodacom cup. later they can be upgraded to currie cup and Super 14. If you prove yourself there (the toughest and best league in the world) you can be drafted into the training camp of the Springboks. Then only if they make the team I would suggest gradually working them in as subs to see how they handle the tests.

PS I love being the couch coach! lol
 
I think some of the players that you guys are calling "B team" players will perform better than the "regular" players would have done on Saturday. These guys (Louw, Potgieter, Aplon, Botha, CJ, Big Joe and co) have a lot to prove and this is their chance to impress PdV and the selectors.

If anything, Wales are in for a tougher time!
 
Well it's like the cricket team, always the same players and anyone else that can play doesn't get a chance in the side. Leads to complacency and stagnation. I say bring on the new talent and make the boys fight for there positions.

It is a very different environment with different pressures in a test match as opposed to Currie Cup or Super 14. So to start building a squad for the wordl cup, the fringe and younger players need to run out in test matches as well. Using your reasoning , even tests against Italy, Uruguay, etc. should be with a full strength SA team, which is ultimately pointless.
 
Ok now we are getting somewhere. I think John Smit is a great captain BUT why is it that the Hooker position seem to be reserved only for him? I think between Bismark, the two stormers guys (Liebenberg and Fourie), Gary Botha and others, they will compliment each other better to perform better in selections if they knew the no2 slot was not a guarantee to John.

In the same breath. I am glad that the "two week long" no 5 of the stormers (Bekker) makes such an impact. Now the loose forwards need to perform to secure their place in the squad and not just "know they will be there (talking about bakkies)

If all places in a side is always in jeopardy, players will train harder and play better to secure their place. This way you will always have the best team on the field

John smit "weakens" the scrum the least when he is playing in the nr 2 jersey. He is on Auto-selection atm because of his captaincy.

There needs to be balance between consistency and rejuvenation. The barbarians have awesomely tallented players but because they have not played together as a team for very long they mostly lose to teams with less talented players but who have "settled" as a unit. The same goes for too little change, as stated above, the team will then stagnate and again it will lose.
 
I am so glad someone agrees with me. I was expecting a heavy fire for the comments about Smit.
He is over his prime, but still a good captain. Unfortunately for us all age will make him even better as a captain but not as a player. It is two graphs working in opposite directions.
 
Ha, I remember quite a few games where our forward play was a lot better with Smith off the feild, especially scrums and recycling.
 
they interviewed Butch James on the news tonight but hell that did not look like the guy that played in the Springboks before.

I've been watching as many games of Bath as I can... Butch is still the same!!

I agree with those points, however it's not the 80's anymore and these guys play 3 times as much rugby.

Should still be a good game and worth watching.

(Putting RP at flyhalf is inexcuseable - I cannot defend that.)
